Irving Berlin seemingly writes at least one
outstanding popular song each year. His latest
such offering is entitled "When You Walked
Out Someone Else Walked Right In," a most
modern title, to say the least. Aside from that,
however, the lyrics tell a story that in con-
junction with the typical Berlin melody should
give the issue some unusual popularity.
Since its release the professional department
of the Berlin organization reports that a large
number of vaudeville acts are programming it
and that its sales have had some activity. The

Hamilton S. Gordon Adds to Gordon Collection
of Motion Picture Scores
A new addition has just been made to the
Gordon Loose-Leaf Motion Picture Collection,
published by Hamilton S. Gordon, 145 West
Thirty-sixth street, New York City. It is the
work of Walter C. Simon, who composed the
first original music score ever written for mo-
tion pictures. Musicians in motion picture the-
atres who have used compositions under the
name of Charles K. Herbert will be interested
to know that they were composed by Mr. Simon.
In speaking of the particular thought and care
given to the arrangements and originality of
motion picture scores, etc., Mr. Simon said:
"I do not think that there will be any composer
who will surpass such masters as Beethoven,
Bach and Wagner in their particular fields.
While it is true composers may be influenced
by the works of the old masters, particularly
if they have a fondness for their thematic treat-
ments, I hardly think that the modern composer
would in any way imitate their works. I am
very fond of fugue and canon and in most
of my classical compositions I employ the same
in arranging my work."

big campaign on the number will not reach its
height until the early Fall season, when, in
addition to an intensive campaign in vaudeville
circles, this publicity will be supplemented by
a large number of orchestras.

In "Folk Songs of Many Peoples" (The
Woman's Press) the editor, Florence Hudson
Botsford, as she says in her preface, has not
limited her choice to folk songs alone, but has
included others. The present volume, which is
marked her second, contains more than 250
songs from the United States, Mexico, Latin
America, French Canada, sixteen countries of
Europe, five countries of Asia and Africa.
There are also Jewish songs from many coun-
tries. These have been arranged by different
musicians, some of them of prominence. The
songs are given in their original tongues—even
when this means Arabic, modern Greek, Yiddish
and even more out-of-the-way languages—and
English translations.
