Ruling on Rates for Veneer Shipments

Figures Compiled by the National Lumber

duction in October Throughout the U. S.
A decision of wide interest to veneer shippers
was recently handed down by the Interstate
Commerce Commission in the case of the Na-
tional Veneer and Panel Manufacturers' Asso-
ciation versus Aberdeen & Rockfish. The Com-
mission ruled that the veneer and built-up wood
rates in this case were "unduly prejudicial to
shippers of built-up woods and arc preferential
to lumber shippers."
A rate of 15 per cent above the regular lum-
ber rate was held as fair by the Commission
and it was also ruled that reparation should be
made by roads on rates over this figure. To
secure this reparation veneer shippers must com-
ply with rule V of the rules of practice and
file suit during the statutory period. The suit
was handled for the Association by the Southern
Hardwood Traffic Association and the revisions
ordered by the Interstate Commerce Commis-
sion on freight rates on veneers and ply-woods
will be effective from points in Southern, West-
ern and mountain Pacific States.
H. & H. PRODUCTS IN DEMAND
Piano Plate Concern Doing Big Business—
Plant Working to Capacity
STAMFORD, CONN., October 30.—The H. & H.
Foundry & Machine Co., well-known piano
plate maker, of this city, is experiencing heavy
demands for its product. A strong indication
of the rush business experienced throughout
the piano industry at this time is to be found
in the almost universal specifying of immediate
shipment. The foundry of the company is
working at full capacity taking care of these
orders and the trucks of the company are mak-
ing many long-distance hauls as far as New
York and Boston to insure prompt delivery of
the plates.
N. Adler, general manager of the company,
is optimistic regarding future business and
through his business ability is guiding the com-
pany in its continuous growth.
AN INTERESTING TRADE REPORT
U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Issues Report
on Piano Manufacturing Industry
WASHINGTON, D. C, October 30.—Better busi-
ness in the piano industry is indicated by re-
ports filed with the Bureau of Labor Statistics
by eleven piano manufacturing establishments,
which showed that employment in September
was considerably greater than during the pre-
ceding month, although the per capita earnings
of employes were somewhat lower.
During the month of September the reports
show 3,792 persons were employed in the eleven
plants, an increase of 3.3 per cent over the pre-
ceding month, when 3,670 were employed. The
payrolls for one week in September were $101,-
290, an increase of 2.3 per cent over August,
when they were $98,966.
The Samuel-Bittel Music Co., of Owensboro,
Ky., has secured new quarters in the heart of
the business section of the city. The company
is now located at 105 West Third street.
Evidences of increased activity throughout the
entire piano industry have been forcefully mani-
fested since the beginning of the Fall season
by the steady influx of orders being received
by the Charles Ramsey Corp., Kingston, N. Y.,
manufacturers of piano hardware and specialties.
Charles Ramsey, president of the corporation,
has just returned from a vacation during which
he and Mrs. Ramsey visited the old and new
worlds. After spending a few weeks in Eng-
land, they proceeded to South Africa via the
West Coast route, stopping at the Madeira Isl-
ands on the way. Two months were spent in
Africa and included visits to the Victoria Falls,
the Zambesi River, the Mattoppos and various'
other places of interest and historic character-
in Rhodesia, as well as all the principal towns;
in the sub-continent. Their return was via the v
East route, stopping at Portugese East Africa,
British East Africa, late German East Africa
territory and on through Aden and the Suez
Canal to Egypt and the Mediterranean. A short
sojourn in England and Scotland concluded the
trip.
Mr. Ramsey is now preparing to visit the
trade and has made arrangements at the factory
which will enable him to keep in closer per-
sonal touch with customers and render more
efficient service than ever heretofore. Business
has been exceptionally good during the last few
months. "Last month," said H. A. Campbell,
of the corporation, to a representative of The
Review, this week, "saw a great improvement
and at the present time orders are coming in at
a rapid rate. On some lines overtime work has
been the order for the past two or three weeks.
It is very apparent that our customers have
struck a good stride and are now making de-
mands on us for prompt service. However, we
are still well able to cope with their demands,
which we hope will continue and increase. As
we see it, the business aspect has changed
greatly for the better within the past six weeks.
Settlement of the coal and rail strikes has re-
vived the spirit of optimism and there is every
indication that the piano trade has definitely
decided that the conditions well warrant gen-
erous buying. Further, orders well ahead are
being placed and we have already booked orders
up to December, 1923."

WASHINGTON, D. C, October 31.—Lumber pro-
duction in the United States during the week
ending October 21 was 255,631,879 board feet,
the highest total reached this year. The
National Lumber Manufacturers' Association,
which compiles the figures each week from tele-
graphic reports from all the mills, declared that
this huge increase was due chiefly to the West
Coast Lumbermen's Association's larger output.
Advances in shipments and orders were also
reported.
The production, which was a gain of about
5,000,000 feet over the preceding week, and
72,000,000 over the output of the corresponding
week of last year, is based on reports from 417
mills, the largest number reporting so far this
year, and a net gain of twenty over the pre-
ceding week.
Interior mills generally report further declines
in shipments, the net gain being due chiefly
to mills tributary to marine transportations.
Altogether production last week exceeded ship-
ments by 61,000,000 feet.
All the reporting mills of eight regional asso-
ciations when totaled give their shipments as
76 per cent and their orders as 73 per cent of
production. The 381 mills of five associations
with an established normal production for the
week of 241,800,946 show an actual production of
235,903,593, or 98 per cent of normal, and their
shipments were 74 per cent and orders 72 per
cent of normal.
Generally speaking, the disparity between
shipments and orders on the one hand and pro-
duction on the other reflects the effects of
limited transportation facilities rather than re-
ceding business activity. * Production is being
forced in response to potential lumber require-
ments while shipments and orders decline in
consequence of car shortage.
Are you still wasting your time and go-
ing to the expense of scraping off old
varnish and shellac to eliminate the
checks and cracks in order to secure a
smooth surface for refinishing?
Use Behlen's Vamish Crack Eradica-
tor.
It saves time, trouble and incidentally
expense, at the same time giving you as
fine a body surface for the new finish
as you could possibly wish for.
A sample can for trial awaits your
request.
