TWO ORCHESTRAS OFF FOR LONDON
Organizations Under Direction of Paul Specht
Sail to Play in London Hotels
Two orchestras operating under the direction
of Paul Specht, the well-known orchestra leader,
sailed on Saturday last for England, where they
are to play at London hotels. The two musical
combinations are known as "The Criterions" and
"The 'Frisco Syncopators."
It is understood that several orchestra offices
were negotiating for the contract in question,
which, in addition to the two orchestras named,
calls for sixty additional men within the next
few months who are to play in various other
large English centers.
Paul Specht himself will remain in New York
with his orchestra at the Astor Hotel Roof, but
he has assured his English clients that he will,
in the near future, send his orchestra to
England.
What are termed "The Regular Fellows" of
the sheet music and mechanical reproduction
fields held an outing at McKenna Lodge, Silver
Lake Country Club, on Thursday of last week.
One of the features of the occasion was a seven-
inning ball game, the teams being captained by
Ed Bloedon and Cliff Hess, the Bloedon aggre-
gation winning the event by a score of ten to
seven.
It is understood that a real game of galloping
dominos, in which hundreds of dollars changed
hands, was one of the conspicuous events of
the day.
Several prizes were given to contestants in
several features of the program. Among these
was a three-legged race won by Vitali and Del-
hoff. Sam Perry won the fat man's race and
the hundred-yard dash found Mike Kosman with
winning colors.
The affair was well attended and was one
of the most enjoyable and successful ever given
by the publishers. Among those who attended
were: William Murray, Billy Jones, Ernest
Hare, Arthur Bergh, E. B. Marks, Edward
Christie, Oscar Delhoff, Mike Kosman, Sam
Perry, Lou Schlesinger, Pete Wendling, Max
Kortlander, Abe Ohlman, Mario Terry, John
Vitali, Ben Bornstein, Frank Wright, Justus
Rose, Edward Kirkaby, Jack Bliss, Mack Stark,
Sol Kalp, Joe Goodwin, Emerson Yorke, Edgar
Leslie, Elliott Shapiro, Eddie Adam, Joe Davis,
Cliff Hess, Frank Goodman, Ed Spero, Erving
Mills, Jimmy McHugh, George Beynon, Dan
Winkler and others who proclaimed, without
mental reservation, that it was "some" outing.

copyright protection to thirty years after the
death of the author. Dramas and musical pro-
ductions are required to be played within ten
years after publication, provided a suitable
royalty is paid the author. Amateur societies
are exempt from this provision if the players
receive no compensation for the presentation
of the plays.
If the above law passes it automatically gives
the same protection to citizens of the United
States through a copyright treaty existing be-
tween the United States and Switzerland which
grants reciprocal protection upon compliance
with the laws of both countries.

NEW HAROLD FLAMMER CATALOG
FOLIO OF OLD FAVORITES
NO NEED FOR ATTACKS ON JAZZ
Imposing Volume Lists All the Publications of
That House in Attractive Form
Leo Feist, Inc., Issues Attractive Collection of
Old, But Still Popular, Numbers
Craze Has Apparently Spent Itself So Far as
Music Is Concerned
Harold Flammer, Inc., has just issued a book
in which is contained the complete catalog of
that young publishing firm. This includes songs
both secular and sacred, vocal duets, choruses,
anthems and musical readings, as well as com-
positions for the piano, organ and violin. The
catalog is illustrated with portraits of numerous
composers who have contributed to the mate-
rial, and in addition has reproductions of the faces
of some of the leading concert and opera stars
who program the issues. The catalog comprises
4,067 manuscripts and in the foreword it is said:
"These have been chosen conservatively and
with one aim to obtain the best."
As announced in these columns some time
ago, Leo Feist, Inc., has published a new folio
under the title "Good Old Timers." The pub-
lication includes seventy-five songs, described as
"numbers you can't forget." These are ar-
ranged for singing and dancing and include
such numbers as: "K-K-K-Katy," "Her Golden
Hair Was Hanging Down Her Back," "I Can't
Tell You Why I Love You, But I Do," "In All
My Dreams," "In the Good Old Summertime,"
"Just Tell Them That You Saw Me," "Ireland
Must Be Heaven, for My Mother Came From
There," "Turkey in the Straw," "When You
Wore a Tulip," "You're Here and I'm Here,"
'-There's a Spark of Love Still Burning," "Rose
of No Man's Land," "Sidewalks of New York,"
"Smokey Mokes," "Peg o' My Heart," "Over
There," and other numbers of like prominence.
The book will retail for fifty cents.
We still hear outbursts from various people
against what is termed the "jazz" craze, particu-
larly referring to music. No less a personage
than the treasurer of one of the publishers'
organizations recently wrote several columns
denouncing and attacking jazz. We understood
that jazz was passe and as a matter of fact
works that can be so classed are seldom to be
found in any of the leading catalogs. Jazz has
spent itself and in its place we now have the
melody song. The orchestras that were once
termed "jazz combinations" are now known as
symphonic syncopators and as far as we can
see there is no necessity for the continuance
of the outbursts against jazz in referring to
music.
CAINE WITH STARK & COWAN
Sidney Caine, of S. C. Caine, Inc., has joined
the staff of Stark & Cowan. All of the Caine
numbers with the exception of "Isle of Zorda,"
which was released in conjunction with the
Pathe photoplay of the same name, have been
incorporated in the Stark & Cowan catalog.
Negotiations for the placing of "Isle of Zorda"
are under way.
LOPEZ AT THE PALACE
Vincent Lopez and His Pennsylvania Orches-
tra, who recently played a two weeks' engage-
ment at the Palace Theatre, New York, followed
by a week at the Orpheum in Brooklyn, returned
to the Palace on Monday of this week and it
is announced will play there indefinitely.
