CONDEMNS POPULAR HYMNS
Theological Dean Decries the "Tinkling Ditty"
Type of Church Music
ROCHESTER, N. Y., June 5.—"Brighten the Cor-
ner Where You Are" and like hymns are tin-
kling ditties and not fit to be sung in Sunday
schools and at church services throughout the
Baptist denomination, Dean J. W. A. Stewart,
of the Rochester Theological Seminary, told
church leaders who gathered here for the sec-
ond annual meeting of the Baptist Union of
Rochester and Monroe counties.
He also condemned the playing by church
orchestras of jazz or popular pieces which, he
said, is a general and abominable practice, par-
ticularly in Sunday schools.
PROVIDE SCORE FOR "SPICES"
There is now in preparation a Summer musical
revue called the "Spices." The book is by Jack
Lait, with music by James Hanley, George
Gershwin and J. Fred Coots, with lyrics by
McElbert Moore, Owen Murphy and Irving
Caesar.
"NOLA" ON RECORD LISTS
Vincent Lopez and his Hotel Pennsylvania
Orchestra have recorded the Sam Fox Co. publi-
cation, "Nola," for several of the talking ma-
chine record manufacturers. This song and in-
strumental in fox-trot form has been one of the
most active of the present season's releases.
The Triangle Music Publishing Co. has ac-
cepted for publication a novelty fox-trot en-
