Prominent Musical Comedy Composer Passes
Away in Lenox Hill Hospital, New York
Victor Jacobi, composer of the music of many
musical comedies and light operas, died in the
Lenox Hill Hospital on December 10, following
a short illness. He was a Hungarian, having been
born thirty-seven years ago in Budapest, where

sister. He had been living at 38 West Fifty-

NEW SCHIRMER ISSUES
Two
Sonatas of Much Value Just Released
G. Schirmer
by
Among recent important publications by G.
Schirmer are the sonata for piano in D minor
by Charles T. Griffes, completed apparently
about two years before his death, and the sonata
by Alexander Macfadyen, Op. 21, in C sharp
minor, the one played by Josef Hofmann in his
concert of compositions by Americans given in
New York a few years ago. It is no inconsider-
able honor that the piece thereby gained. It
shows talent, a command of the idiom of the
keyboard, and, as Mr. Huneker remarked after
the performance, a well-developed admiration
for MacDowell.
Mr. Griffes' sonata is a considerably more
original work, more austere, more difficult in its
substance, if not in its technical demands; full
of modern dissonances, more than some other
of his compositions that have been heard here.
It is a composition not lightly to be approached
by pianists of lesser accomplishments.
SECURES NEW HEADOUARTERS
Syracuse Publishing Firm Now in Enlarged
Offices in That City
The Phoenix-Kline Music Co., the well-known
Syracuse music firm, has taken over new quar-
ters at 415 South Salina street, that city. Ben
Kline, one of the executives of the firm, who is
well known in sheet music and orchestra circles,
in speaking of the progress made by his com-
pany, recently said: "After four years of steady
growth we have found our present facilities and
space inadequate to properly care for our con-
tinual increase in trade. We are now located in
a new home where we can better serve the musi-
cal trade and profession."

GOOD BUSINESS IN CHICAGO
Sheet Music Trade Improving Steadily in th*
Middle West—Richmond Numbers Popular—
Price Question No Longer Important
December 12.—Since the middle
of October the sheet music business in Chicago
and the West has been steadily on the up-trend.
The first few days of December showed a re-
markable gain, which indicates steady improve-
ment ahead in 1922. There is more enthusiasm evi-
dent to-day than in many months past on the part
of travelers who cover the Western territory for
the various music publishers. The plug songs
are all selling well and the counter numbers are
enjoying a good demand. Another good sign is
the closer co-operation between the publishers
and the dealers, both sheet music and talking
machine. Publishers are taking a great interest
in the manner in which merchants are featur-
ing their hits and are providing cover-pages and
display cards for show windows.
The price question seems to have settled
itself and merchants everywhere have come to
accept the 25-cent rate as standard and satisfac
toryto everyone concerned. The fact that prices
ihave been stabilized has given encouragement to
'both jobbers and merchants and both are out
after business harder than ever. Fox-trots con-
tinue to head the list of popular numbers, but
the grow'ng favor of the waltz, already evident
in the East, is slowly traveling westward and
there is no doubt but that the next few mo.iths
will see an increased sale of waltz numbe s in
Chicago and the West.
Harry Engel, Publicity Man
Harry Engel, that exceedingly live and popu-
lar representative of Maurice Richmond, Inc., re-
turned to Chicago last week after an extended
trip to the Coast. Besides calling on many of
the trade in the territory through which he
traveled he found time to pull off a number of
highly successful publicity stunts in the interests
of the numbers "Yoo-Hoo" and "Mello 'Cello."
Shadow-graphs in which a 'cello player from the
orchestra was placed behind the stage and his
form thrown upon the screen along with the
lines of the song "Mello 'Cello" formed one of
the most popular stunts staged at such prominent
theatres as the Tivoli, Senate, etc.
On his Western trip Engel found business best
in the extreme Northwest. "The trade is very
similar in all parts of the West," said he, "and

has shown considerable improvement during the
past few weeks. The prevailing hits are: "Tuck
Me to Sleep," "My Sunny Tennessee," "Yoo-
Hoo," "Wabash Blues," "Sweetheart," "Leave
Me With a Smile," "Mississippi Cradle" and
"When Shall We Meet Again?" Among the
production hits are: "Say It With Music,"
"Sally," "April Showers" and "Second-hand
Rose."
Incidentally, it might be mentioned here that
Harry Ergel will represent the new firm of Mau-
rice Richmond Music Supply Co., whic i will job
sheet music and supplies to merchants through-
out the country. This concern wi 1 be apart
from the firm of Maurice Richmond. Inc., pub-
lishers, and will practic?lly do the same kind
of business as thai of the old Enterprise Musi-
cal Supp y Co., in which Maurice Richmond was
also interested. This gentleman, however, will
continue to retain his interest in the firm of
Maurice Richmond, Inc.
Kresge's Do Good Business
The S. S. Kresge Co. has been enjoying an
excellent sheet music business of recent months.
Manager Earl Haubrich was able to show a de-
cided increase during the month of November.
He predicts an even better December. Mr.
Haubrich was formerly with the Woolworth
Stores of St. Louis, but made the change to
Kresge several months ago. Through untiring
efforts he has made the Kresge sheet music
counters among the most popular and profitable
in the city.
Feist Manager Believes in Work
Rocco Vocco, manager for Leo Feist in the
West, believes that downright hard work is the
only way to overcome depression. "Of course,"
says he, "there is" depression in every line, but
that cannot stop the sale of big song hits when
they are properly plugged. I think it would be
much more effective if everyone who is deplor-
ing hard times would get down and try to
remedy them rather than sit still and talk about
conditions."
