POPULAR MUSIC NOT DESTRUCTIVE
Declares Geoffrey O'Hare, W h o Cites Some
Interesting Arguments in Support of Claim
The Sam Fox Pub. Co., Cleveland, O., has
just acquired the American rights to four songs
by Dorothy Forster, the famous English com-
poser, all of which are now ready for distribu-
tion.
In view of the popularity in the past of Eng-
lish ballads, it would seem that there are big
possibilities for these songs, which are consid-
ered among the best works of this excellent
composer. The Fox organization looks forward
to these numbers having big popularity, inas-
much as some of its best-selling ballads, particu-
larly those of the higher type, have been of
English origin.
The titles of the four songs are: "Come—For
It's June," "A Little Home With You," "A
Wild, Wild Rose" and "Garden of "Summer."
They are of the typical English ballad style and
yet are possessed of melody to the degree
that makes an appeal to the average American
music lover.
The Sam Fox Pub. Co. is putting forth an
energetic advertising campaign back of these
songs, covering every channel of publicity ap-
plicable to the music field.
Geoffrey O'Hare, the well-known song leader
and writer of the big success "K-a-t-y," recently
wrote to the editor of the New York Sun the
following, which, we believe, is most timely and
is well worthy of reproduction here:
"Is popular music destructive? A great many
persons believe that many of our social evils
to-day are the result of the degrading influence
of so-called 'nasty' popular songs. Let me cite
a few instances which I believe completely re-
fute this argument.
"When the French public after 100 years of
oppression suddenly rose in revolution that
night was the 'Marseillaise' born—but the 'Mar-
seillaise' did not cause the French revolution.
"Some years ago when our papers were full
of a certain murder trial a young girl was
brought to the bar of justice. She had come to
the end of a sorrowful trail, had married a man
for his money, and how 'the sob squad' of spe-
cial story sifters bared these facts in the news-
paper columns! Harry Von Tilzer and Arthur
Lamb then wrote their famous song, "A Bird
in a Gilded Cage." The subject being uppermost
in the minds of the people, the song was a big

success, but these writers surely could not have
been called accomplices in the murder.
"When, in 1914, someone took the lid off hell
and the reincarnated hatred, jealousy and self-
ishness of a thousand years broke loose and
the world was on lire, George M. Cohan wrote
'Over There,' which was a worldwide success,
but George Cohan's song did not cause the
great war.
"When one of our best known motion picture
actresses 'vamped' her way to glory and mil-
lions, Byron Gay wrote a song called 'The
Vamp,' but his song did not cause this epidemic.
"The moral of all this is that popular songs
are not the cause but the effect. They are but
the flowers on the tree of national thought. If
we would change the flowers we must look to
the roots of the tree and change the nourish-
ment. The best bred horses were developed
from wild horses. We did not get to-day's
thoroughbred by destroying all the wild horses
years ago. Our choicest apples were once wild,
and we now enjoy them because of the cultiva-
tion, not because of destruction.
"The wild, rhythmic, pulsating American
popular songs of to-day are American. Culti-
vate them—do not crush them; develop—do not
destroy; improve—do not impeach."
Chas. E. Hochberg & Co., Brooklyn, N. Y.,
are the publishers of a new song entitled "In
Old Biscay," which has had some popularity in
orchestra circles.

Loyal B. Curtis, of the well-known publish-
ing nrm of Van Alstyne & Curtis, Toledo, ().,
recently spent a number of days in New York
City. While here he gave particular attention
to arranging plans for some unusual publicity
in behalf of the firm's song, "Some Little Bird."
This number, which is at present leading the
catalog of the company, has either been re-
corded or is booked for early release by prac-
tically all the talking machine record and music
roll manufacturing organizations. It is quite
popular in orchestra circles and with the new
publicity plans as arranged by the publishers it
is expected that "Some Little Bird" will be one
of the big numbers of the early part of 1921.
SONGS FROM THE PACIFIC COAST
In recent seasons it has been quite usual to ex-
pect new songs from the Pacific Coast.
Churchill, Young & Co., 218 South Broadway,
Los Angeles, Cal., have just been added to the
list of publishers in that active territory. Some
time ago they announced a song entitled "Sit-

ting on the World With You," which has had
some popularity in the vaudeville field and which
an excellent dance number. Recently

tributors of "Brilliantonc," "Wall-Kane" and
"Tonafone" steel needles, will also occupy space
on the floor.
