GARY SEES BETTER CONDITIONS

Tendency Is Toward Improvement, Says Head
of U. S. Steel Corporation
Former Secretary of Sherwin-Williams Co. to
Direct Growing Glidden Organization
The present tendency in business is toward
improvement and the general aspect, including the
temper of business men, is better, in the opinion
of Judge E. H. Gary, chairman of the United
States Steel Corporation. If this continues, the
Judge declared this week, we are certain to have
decided improvement within a comparatively
short time. Although there are some lines in
which further cutting of prices seems necessary,
the Judge said, there have been cases in which
retailers have sold goods at prices below what
they paid for them, showing a healthy disposition
to make necessary adjustments, dispose of stocks
and get into a financial position which will enable
them to go ahead in the regular way.
"I see increasing signs of a disposition on the
part of producers to recognize conditions and
submit to such reductions in selling prices as are
necessary," Judge Gary said. "Also it must be
evident to every one that a large percentage of
workmen are disposed to accept and are propos-
ing reductions in wages immediately following the
action of their employers to make reductions in
their prices. This is a good sign and will have a
decided effect.
"In the steel business those who are buying are
buying from the standpoint of necessity, and this
buying to date has secured for our corporation, at
least, a substantial volume of business, consider-
ing the times, and will, I hope, enable us to con-
tinue the payment of the usual dividends. Under
these conditions how could we be other than
optimistic?
"As I have remarked perhaps more than once,
the immediate future and the year's business will
depend wholly on the temper, conversation and
the action of the general public, which includes
the business men and the representatives of the
press. I do not believe in misrepresentation of
facts. 15lit 1 would always rather emphasize the
many good features in sight than to dwell upon
the unsatisfactory features, if there are any. The
facts are still in favor of progress and prosperity."

started witli the Sherwin-Williams Co. twenty-
rive years ago and rose steadily until he finally
occupied the position of secretary, which posi-
tion he held until his recent Glidden connection.
Mr. Levenhagen's ability as an organizer will
be given its real opportunity in his new connec-
tion. The Glidden Co., with its fast-growing
auxiliary organizations, requires a man of Mr.
Levenhagen's caliber to properly direct them. It
is confidently expected that under his capable
supervision these auxiliaries, already of national
prominence, will take on even renewed vigor.
PETITION IN BANKRUPTCY FILED
ST. LOUIS, MO., January 15.—An involuntary peti-
tion in bankruptcy was tiled last week against
the Western Veneer Products Co. in the U. S.
District Court here. Wilson & Trueblood ap-
peared as attorneys for the petitioning creditors.
SUFFER HEAVY FIRE LOSS
The music store of Fenwick & Giblin, in
Lacon, 111., was practically destroyed recently
by fire, most of the stock of talking machine
records, music rolls and sheet music being
burned or damaged. The loss is covered by
insurance.
David H. Garfield, piano dealer of Lynn,
Mass., has moved his business to handsome new
quarters at 25 Central square, that city, where
he held a formal opening on January 8.
R. W . Levenhagen
with the Sherwin-Williams Co., has joined the
rapidly expanding organization of The Glidden
Co., this city, as vice-president.
Mr. Levenhagen has spent the greater part of
his life in the paint and varnish industry and is
among the best known men in the trade. He
