INTRODUCE THE "WORKING SQUAD"
Riviera Music Co. Puts Into Effect a New Plan
for Popularizing Songs
The Riviera Music Co., of Chicago, recently
put into operation a new plan known as the
"working squad," composed of three singers and
a pianist, who are covering the large cities in
the Middle West. They are especially program-
ing "Rose of China," "La Brenda" and a new
fox-trot, "Sweet Southern Dream," and "Desert
Land."
The new Riviera number, "Karma," described
as an Egyptian fox-trot, is now being' featured
in Chicago territory by Valde, the Spanish
dancer.
Louis Breau, professional manager of Belwin,
Inc., is back at his desk after a few months'
tour of Middle West and Pacific Coast trade
centers.
"SWEETIE PLEASED
PORTLAND, ORE., May 20.—Last week the Oregon
composers celebrated by a get-together luncheon
at the Benson Hotel and an exhibition of the
works of the Oregon composers in the windows
of the Bush & Lane Piano Co. on Broadway.
The display was arranged by D. O. Byrne, of
the Bush & Lane Co., who has received many
compliments on the artistic layout of the win-
dow.
Fifty-seven of the Oregon composers con-
tributed to the display, which was composed of
both vocal and instrumental selections, many of
which were published here in Portland. Among
the number were several of national note. The
display was made under the auspices of the So-
ciety of Oregon Composers, and of the fifty-
seven contributing to the exhibit fifty-one were
members of the society. The purpose of the ex-
hibit was to stimulate interest in rmusic produc-
tion in Oregon and to show Portland and Ore-
gon just what had been done in music by our
local musicians. The display has been turned
over to the Central library of the city for file
there.
Taylor C. White, manager of the Remick Song
Shop, says that they have had a very big sale
of the humorous song hit, "Ain't We Got Fun?"
They are featuring this week "Just Keep a
Thought for Me" and the new Japanese song,
"Tea Leaves," which, it is believed, is destined
to prove a worthy successor to the "Japanese
Sandman." Both of these songs are having a
big sale.
Kathleen Benoit Campbell, manager of the
sheet music department of the Lipman-Wolfe
store, says "I Lost My Heart to You" and "Call-
ing" are the two new hits of Jack Mills that
are being much called for and are taking well.
Among the other new songs for which there is a
big demand at present are "Maybe" and "Hono-
lulu Eyes."

NEW SONG HIT FROM PACIFIC COAST
Nat Goldstein Publishing Co. Featuring "Patsy"
in a Big Way—Both Members of Company
Have Had Much Experience in the Trade
FRANCISCO, CAI.., May 20.—A hit over-
night, sung and played and whistled by increas-
ing hundreds and thousands every day, "Patsy,"
the first number to be released by the new Nat
Goldstein Publishing Co., is rapidly proving a
sensation throughout California.
The assured success of "Patsy" established
the new San Francisco publishing company on
a firm basis. Associated with Nat Goldstein,
the well-known song writer, who has for the
last ten years written many of the Remick hits,
is Ford Rush, until the formation of the new
concern professional representative of Jerome
II. Remick & Co. on the Pacific Coast. Through
Rush's popularity and widespread acquaintance,
together with Goldstein's success as a writer, it
is felt that "Patsy" and other numbers to be
published by the company will prove big hits.
Both Rush and Goldstein are leaving on a trip
to cover the Coast in the interests of "Patsy"
and to further the success of the Goldstein pub-
lications. Two other numbers published by the
concern on which a campaign will be launched
in a short time are the fox-trots "Harem Eyes"
and "I'm Learning to Love You."

The orchestra is directed by Paul Specht, who
may be remembered as the writer of "Wishing-
Specht's Orchestra at the Alamac Now One of land," a waltz published by Forster, Music Pub-
lisher, Inc., Chicago, and which was recently
the Popular Dance Orchestras at That Resort
issued with a new arrangement by Harry Alford.
The Paul Specht Orchestra, now playing at Mr. Specht is also the composer of "Fondly,"

Other numbers that they are featuring are:

an orchestra using the standard instruments as "Absence," "All for You," "Love Bird," "Croon-

Heart to You," "Now and Then," "Crazy Blues,"
"Humming," "Keep a Thought for Me,"
"Cherie," "Nestle in Your Daddy's Arms," "My
Mammy," "I Found a Rose in the Devil's Gar-
den," "Make Believe," "It's All Over Now,"
"Answer," and "O-hi-o."
It is now understood that the Specht Orches-
tra has contracted with one of the larger phono-
graph companies to record some of the current
hits, announcements of which will be made in
the near future.
