B. D. Nice & Co., Inc., will celebrate their records of this progressive organization and its
second anniversary on May 1. Two years ago accomplishments are well worth notice.
It has confined its activities to numbers of
this enterprising young firm opened offices with
a settled policy and catalog dedicated to the merit and the recognition its works have at-
publishing of high-class music, or what they tained has brought the company undeniable
distinction. Some of the numbers are "Tents
of Arabs,", "Romance," "Clouds," "Wond'ring"
and their more recent issue, "Paper Doll," which
promises to be one of the most popular num-
bers of the Spring and Summer season in vocal,
instrumental and dance form.
B. D. Nice & Co., Inc., confined their activi-
ties exclusively to the publication of the works
of Lee David, a young writer who is fast gain-
ing national recognition. He is now working on
the score of an operetta in collaboration with a
book by Samuel Shipman, author of "East Is

GENERAL INCREASE IN MUSIC STUDY
More Music Teachers and Pupils Now Than
There Were Five Years Ago—Facts of In-
terest for the Information of Publishers
The inactivity of sales in the sheet music field,
which, from numerous angles, has been a prob-
lem to publishers for almost a year, has been
more pronounced in recent weeks through the
fact that even hit numlbers were not as good
sellers as their popularity would seem to justify.
The publishers, of course, exploited such num-
bers on a large scale, but the results from their
efforts have not been up to expectations.
This has led publishers to feel that the player
roll and the record were "cleaning up," when,
as a matter of fact, the sales of these products
have also been affected. Some of the publish-
ers, however, are firmly of the opinion that tne
player roll has decreased their sales of sheet
music, and, while they cannot prove this, it has
led those interested to look up the various salej
activities in channels that could be taken as a
criterion of the merits or demerits of such con-
clusions in regard to the player roll and its
alleged encroachments.
They find, as outlined in these columns in
a recent article, that the straight piano output
each year is quite large. They find also that
all the straight pianos that have been manu-
factured are practically in use. They do not
become obsolete or antiquated in a short space
of time.
To supplement that information The Review
has endeavored to make a close study of the
activities in the teaching field as regards increase
of pupils, if any, increase in the number of mu-
sic teachers, schools, conservatories, etc., which
developed the fact that there has been an in-
crease of teachers in this country from about 8
to 15 per cent in the last live years. These con-
clusions are based upon the increased demand
for teaching- music in lower grades, which all
music publishers are at present feeling. The
leading publishing houses in the standard field
find a ready sale for practically anything in the
educational line that has merit.
Among the educators, that is to say, the fac-
ulty members of conservatories and schools,
etc., we find that there is prevalent a belief that
candidates for the music teaching profession are
on the increase and of a better standard than
formerly. Thus it seems that both music teach-
ers and music pupils have gained in number.
There is a belief in some quarters that the
propagation of music in the public schools has
done much for music in the country as a whole
and this department in most schools has not
only taken on added interest, but has a public
behind it that, constantly increasing, is insist-
ing upon further recognition for music.
