menced operations on the Pacific Coast on a
large scale with the arrival there of M. M.
Leidt, who will open up an office as the firm's
Pacific Coast representative at 25 Kearny street,
this city, during the first week in January. Mr.
Leidt has made an extensive tour of the State
of California as a prelude to his campaign to
push ther house's numbers and arranged for the
listing of one of their numbers in the well-known
"Edition Beautiful," "Berceuse" from "Jocelyn,"
at the California Theatre in San Francisco.
Another new opening of territory in San
Francisco is announced by L. F. Goelzlin, well-
known publishers' representative, with offices at
908 Market street, who has taken charge of the
Pacific Coast representation for the Riviera
Music Co.

The Ditson Novelty List for January, in ad-
dition to containing much valuable and useful
information regarding the new publications
offered by the Oliver Ditson Co. for the
month, has an editorial on the selling of new
music books that should be taken to heart by
every music dealer who is not doing as well
with the new books as might be expected. The
editorial repeats advice that has been given on
many previous occasions and which has proven
sound in actual practice and reads in part:
"Have you ever tried the plan of sending
to every music teacher, music conductor and
music lover in your territory the particular
book or piece of music selected from novelties
received by you which you believe will be suited
to his needs? If not, we suggest that you
give it a trial. We know from personal experi-
ence that customers appreciate attention of
this kind and returns in the shape of orders
are very satisfactory.
"We will send you with return privilege
enough copies of music and books selected
from this January Novelty List for you to
make a demonstration with your customers.
"Why not give it a trial? We are doing
everything in our power to co-operate with
VAN ALSTYNE & CURTIS
you and it is up to you to serve your cus-
tomers so faithfully and well that they will
not think of sending away from home for their
supplies."
NICE & CO. OPEN CAMPAIGN
Plan, Extensive Publicity Drive on "Sweet

work in the Middle West States; Joe Herman
will represent the firm in New England, and
Mac Lewis will tour the East and South, while
Fred Holmes will act as general traveling rep-
resentative. A big advertising campaign will be
inaugurated in trade and professional circles.

Not content with his discovery of Joe Mc-
Kiernan and Norman Spencer, authors of the
big hits, "Cuban Moon," Don't Take Away Those
Blues," "Gra-na-da," "Now and Then," "Slow
and Easy," etc., Milt Hagen now brings for-
ward another Pacilic Coast discovery in the per-
son of Eva Applefield, a composer of much
ability.
Miss Applefield has already placed songs with
Remick & Co., Jack Mills, Inc., Daniels & Wil-
son and Sherman & Clay, Inc., and her well-
known composition, "Mood Pensive," published
by Sam Fox, is very popular. She has also writ-
ten songs with Maude Fulton, the celebrated
actress and authoress.
A reception in honor of Miss Applefield
was recently held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Weslyn. Among the invited guests were
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Gay, Mr. and Mrs. Charlton
Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Wiedoeft, Neil
Moret, Milt Hagen, Margaret McKee, Ethel
Broaker, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shepard and Mr.
iind Mrs. Hal Dyson.

Excellent Numbers Found in the "Popular
Standard" Witmark Catalog
Besides the two ballad hits, "Let the Rest
of the World Go By" and "Down the Trail to
Home, Sweet Home," the "Popular-Standard"
(Pictorial) publications of M. Witmark & Sons
have included many successful novelty songs
during the year. Waltz songs, fox-trot ballads
and comedy numbers are all enjoying a good
sale, and at the present time this house is repre-
sented by a number of these attractive songs,
all of which are in lively demand by vaudeville
acts and public alike. Among the most success-
•fiii of them are: "In the Dusk," "Tripoli,"
"Rivoli," "I've Got the Blues for My Kentucky
Home," "My Home Town is a One-Horse Town,
But It's Good Enough for Me," "Forgive Me,"
"Parisiola," "My Mother's Evening Prayer,"
"She's the Heart of Dixieland," "That's How
You Can Tell They're Irish," "I'm Doublin'
Back to Dublin" and "Deenah."

Goodman & Rose, Inc., 234 West Forty-sixth

ceiving so many inquiries from the trade that
