Today
One of the most enterprising of the London
music publishers is an American, well known in
New York musical circles, Winthrop Rogers.
Formerly occupying a responsible position in the
New York house of G. Schirmer, he went to
London shortly before the war to establish an
English branch of that house. In course of time
came the evolution to Winthrop Rogers, Ltd., an
independent establishment.
Mr. Rogers has published a number of the
compositions of the younger English school, John
Ireland, Frank Bridge, Frederick Delius, Robert
Quilter, Peter Warlock, as well as many of the
productions of American composers. From his
office is also issued a monthly called The Sack-
but, a lively periodical not at all averse to highly
controversial discussion of musical matters, in-
clined to take the "modernistic" side whenever
that side can be taken, and to let the opposition
have its say with equal vigor. The results arc
often entertaining and more or less instructive;
but it cannot be denied that so far as they have
been submitted to us there is a certain amount
of amateurishness that is not firmly restrained
in The Sackbut.
Among recent publications sent by Winthrop
Rogers, Ltd., are four songs, each by Jo'.in Ire-
land (an Englishman who has attracted con-
siderable attention to his violin sonatas), Frank
Bridge and Peter Warlock, none of which is
commonplace and several of which have con-
siderable distinction; and a set of "Six Inven-
tions" for piano by John Heath, an adventurous
harmonist.

has been nothing short of sensational.

We Knew That
"Grieving for You"
was an orchestral hit, but now comes
AL JOLSON
singing it with tremendous success in
"Sinbad."
