October 23.—A unique bit
of song publicity is being produced this week
in San Francisco by three of the foremost
music publishing houses, Sherman, Clay & Co.,
Watcrson, Berlin & Snyder and the Remick
Song Shop. The idea is a stunt at the largest
local moving picture theatre, The California,
with a seating capacity of 3,000. Mort Harris
and Ford Rush, publicity managers of the two
latter firms, staged a "melody shop," featuring
the song hits of the three publishing houses.
The scene represented a music store and the
stage business consisted of songs by Mary
White, Sherry Hall and Evelyn Hughes; the
two stage managers, Ford Rush and Mort Har-
ris, interspersing the songs with a little comedy.
The song hits featured were "Whispering" and
"Coral Sea," published by Sherman, Clay & Co.;
"Avalon," "Drifting Along" and "Japanese Sand-
man," Remick productions, and "Jinga Bula,"
"Old Pal," "When I Looked in Your Wonderful
F,ycs" and "Gingham Gown Girlie," all pro-
duced by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder. The skit
is being presented thirty-five times this week
and is well received by its audiences.
Larry Yoell, formerly with Forster, Music
Publisher, Tnc, is now plugging for the
Remick Song Shop.
The Melody Shop, Williamsport, Pa., which
publishes a number of successful songs, includ-
ing '"Neath the Honolulu Moon," "Sweet Lulla-
bys," "Someone" and "I'm in Love With All the
Girls," is making a special campaign on two
of its numbers. This campaign includes display
material that is available for dealers in sheet
music, player roll or talking machine records,
and particularly applies to the numbers "I'm in
Love With All the Girls" and '"Neath the Hono-
lulu Moon." Besides the above numbers men-
tioned, the firm also publishes a very appealing
ballad entitled "After the Rain Comes the Sun-
shine." The company has recently been receiv-
ing letters from orchestra leaders who have
shown particular favor to its number "Some-
one."
The firm has also forwarded to the trade a let-
ter from Gerald F. Baker, the well-known organ-
ist of Leavenworth, Kans., who comments fa-
vorably upon both "Sweet Lullaibys" and "Some-
one."

Big Loss From Blaze
Fire in the basement of the building occu-
pied by the Art Publication Society, music pub-
lishers, 4517-19 Olive street, St. Louis, Mo.,
caused damage of $40,000 to $50,000, according
to an estimate of R. S. Waldron, of 5613 En-
right avenue, vice-president of the concern. The
damage was to paper stock and composing room
equipment. The building was slightly damaged.
ENGLAND HAS NEW SONG SUCCESS
"Vale," Published by Boosey & Co., Crosses
Ocean and Arouses Interest in U. S.
Boosey & Co. have just received from their
London headquarters a standard song entitled
"Vale" (Farewell), a work which has already
been acknowledged as a huge success on the
other side "Vale" is from the pens of deBurgh
d'Arcy and Kennedy Russell, and has at times
been fittingly described as of the type of "The
Rosary." Without doubt "Vale" will make an
impression in both American trade and concert
circles. While it is true the style compares
most favorably with songs of the past of the
highest standard, it has something in it that
should give it the popularity of "A Perfect
Day."

early this month. The new building is a three-
story and basement structure of concrete, with
a front finished to resemble white marble, and
is located on the corner with plenty of room
on all sides to guarantee light and air. The
basement is so close to the street level that
it has plenty of daylight and may be regarded
as an additional floor.
The first floor of the building is devoted to
the general offices, the sales department and a
general stockroom. On the second floor are
located the offices of Mr. Wood and other
executives of the company, together with more
storage space for sheet music in packages. It
is planned to lease the top floor to some out-
side concern. The basement will be used for
general storage purposes. The building is
equipped with modern passenger and freight
elevators, and a number of devices for facili-
tating the handling of bulky packages, waste,
etc. The floor space exceeds 16,000 square feet.
The new Wood building is only about a block
away from the New England Conservatory of
Music, the Boston Opera House, Symphony
Hall, and what may be termed the musical
center of the city. A reception room where
visitors may make their headquarters and enjoy
stenographic service is a feature.
