SAYS JAZZ IS "MULATTO MUSIC"
New York World Has Some Interesting Edi-
torial Comment to Make on That Subject

get more fun out of the variations introduced
than does the auditor.
"But this spontaneous musical humor loses
its charm when the white man steps in with
artificial and premeditated syncopations. The
fun of the jazz loses its humor when it becomes
stereotyped and is written into the score.
"Jazz should be natural, or it should not be
at all. Jazz by negroes is music. Jazz by white
men is an annoyance. The black and white do
not mix well. When white men write or per-
form black music we get mulatto music, with
the sins of both the white and black music, and
without the virtues of either."
In a recent editorial in the New York World
characterizing the brand of "jazz" that is being
offered the American public at present as
"mulatto music," the writer takes occasion to
comment as follows upon that particular form
of so-called harmony:
"An English music critic finds that 'jazz' is,
for the most part, fully as bad as it is painted.
In the exception lie makes a distinction worthy
of consideration.
" 'Jazz' in its original form is an outgrowth

DEATH OF PROF. MAX BRUCH
Noted German Composer Passes Away at His
Home in Berlin on Sunday
Prof. Max Bruch, the famous composer of
Berlin, died at his home in that city on Sunday,
aged eighty-three, according to dispatches from
Berlin this week. Brooding over the loss of the
war is said to have hastened the end.
According to friends, Prof. Bruch leaves an
interesting musical estate, including manuscript
scores of two unpublished comic operas, dating
from his best period, "Jery and Baertely" and
"Arlaudine of Villa Bella." To the day of his
death Prof. Bruch refused to permit these to be
produced or published, but said that he did not
care what happened to them after death.
