Earl Fuller Replies to Bodanzky's Criticism of
Jumble Melodies and Declares Jazz Carries a
Musical Message All Its Own
Geoffrey O'Hara, the well-known song leader
and composer of "K-A-T-Y" and other suc-
cesses, recently wrote a song which is being
used by some New York school principals as
propaganda against the "Reds." Apparently the
song has had much success, for the principals
of some of the schools have received anonymous
protests from radical leaders. Inasmuch as we
believe such a song should be encouraged, we
herewith reproduce a part of the lyric:
"Don't you think some people in our land have
talked enough?
Don't you think the time has come to call their
little bluff?
Ask them what's the matter, make them can the
chatter,
Then proceed to make the party rough;
Tell them they're a menace to thejand.
Tell them in a way they'll understand.

"OH! BY JINGO" INTERPOLATED
"Oh! By Jingo," a number published by the
Broadway Music Corp., has been interpolated
in the musical show, "Linger Longer, Letty."
This song, by the way, is quite a favorite with
vaudeville singers, and is not a restricted
number.
In reply to a criticism of jazz music recently
credited to Bodanzky, conductor of the Metro-
politan Orchestra, Earl Fuller, who is far from
unknown in musical circles, says in a letter pub-
lished in the New York Globe:
"Mr. Bodanzky has lately seen fit to inform
the public that 'jazz' is not music, although he
admits a liking for it in spite of its failure to
qualify.
"With all respect to the opinions of the
Metropolitan conductor and teacher of the new
symphony, I dare to differ with him.
"Jazz, written and played properly, is not only
music, but programme music remarkably de-
scriptive. If Mr. Bodanzky has not heard jazz
through the medium of a large orchestra with
a complete orchestration he is not fair to the
subject in his statement. He has not given it
a hearing or probed its possibilities.
"I have a jazz suite in a collection of jazz
classics by American composers, and I believe
that this suite is worthy of presentation on a
symphony programme as real music. In de-
picting the ceremonies attendant on the installa-
tion of a new chieftain in an African village, the
pulsating drum beat which persists throughout
a characteristic two-four allegro preserves the
spirit of jazz completely. In a second move-
ment (a mystic waltz) the voodoo shadow spir-
its are materialized as guardians of the welfare
of the village. The third and last number of
the suite is a bona fide 'shimmy' dance, cele-
brating the occasion in a dance of joy by the
villagers, and merging into a dignified and tri-
umphant recessional, indicative of the with-
drawal of the newly chosen chief.

"If Mr. Bodanzky will look at this score I
am confident that he will write again to the pa-
pers and revise his expressed opinion, conced-
ing that real jazz is music."
