OFFERS PRIZE_FOR NEW CHORUS
Gilbert & Friedland, Inc., recently inserted ad-
vertisements in nearly 500 daily papers asking
song writers throughout the country to fur-
nish extra choruses for Wolfe Gilbert's new
comedy song, "Will It Ever Be the Same
Again," and offering to pay $25 for the ones
accepted.
Wolfe Gilbert wrote so many extra choruses
for the song himself that he ran out of ideas.
Incidentally the contestant would naturally have
to hear the number in order to get the rhythm,
etc. So the advertising stunt may bring sub-
stantial returns in more than one direction.

J. Fred Coots, assistant manager of the New
York office of the McKinley Music Co., is very
enthusiastic over the
results his company is
obtaining on their new
ballad hit, "Pickaninny
Blues," described as a
waltz lullaby. The or-
chestras are getting big
results and the number
is becoming q u i t e
popular w i t h stage
folk.
Mr. Coots, who han-
dles the mechanical re-
production
contracts
for his firm, reports
that it is being record-

ed by practically every
talking machine record and music roll manufac-
turing organization of the country. The whole
McKinley organization is behind the number
and Mr. Coots expects that it will be as popular
as their "Sweet Hawaiian Moonlight," which
was, and is still, a number of great popularity.
Incidentally "Sweet Hawaiian Moonlight" has
been recorded for talking machines both as a
song and as an instrumental number.

Tribune Features Latest Songs
Leo Feist, Inc., had a full-page announcement
in the January 11 issue of the Sunday New
York Tribune on the song hits from the Oliver
Morosco musical comedy success, ."Linger
Longer, Letty." The page appeared in the roto-
gravure section and carried a large reproduction
of Charlotte Greenwood, who plays the stellar
role in the show.
The songs "Twentieth Century Lullaby,"
'•'Linger Longer, Letty" and "Climbing the Lad-
der of Love" were given feature positions in the
publicity, and music and words of the choruses
of those numbers were reproduced. Among
the other songs mentioned were "Did You, My
Boy?" "Let's Pretend," "Strawberry Glide, 1 '
"Mechanical Doll," "It's Just the Movement"
and "Slow Town Is Jazz Town Now."

Benj. Levy, general manager of B. D. Nice &
Co., the well-known music publishing house, is
the inventor of a new device known as the
"Vaudograph," a combination of song and mo-
tion pictures, which can be readily shown in the
motion picture houses throughout the country.
While this idea and method of exploiting the
B. D. Nice & Co.'s songs are mast original and
entertaining, the way in which the publicity is
put over makes the whole also attractive. The
publishers have already made arrangements with
hundreds of motion picture houses to show the
initial reel of "Vaudographs." Among other
things it shows the famous Mosconi Family,
Ted Lewis and his jazz band and the Rath
Bros., as well as the Cameron Sisters, and each
turn is shown in connection with the rendition
oi' either "Tents of Arabs," ''Romance" or
"Wond'ring," songs from the Nice catalog.
By the way, all these performers use the num-
bers* as their musical theme this season. While
the actual film itself only runs a matter of
twelve to fifteen minutes, the novelty creates
unusual interest and the series of films to follow
the initial offering should be awaited with in-
terest. No doubt as long as the idea is pat-
ented, the publicity will get over for a some-
what longer period than would be the case if
it were unprotected.
CHICAGO, I I I . , January 26.— The Riviera Music
Co., prominent music publishers of this city,
announce their removal to their new headquar-
ters in the Chateau Theatre Building.
Among the successful selections published by
the Riviera Company are '"1 Don't Want the
Dollies That Da.ice i.i the Follies," "Lonesome
for You," "In That Paradise of Love," "Sweet-
heart of Mine," "Beautiful Eyes," and "Mar-
riage Life Blues."
M. B. Lee, president of the company, states
that extens.ve plans have been perfected for
the ensuing year and that the advertising de-
partment has planned a number of extensive
and especially unique advertising campaigns.
The reorganization of the professional staff
of the company has just been completed. The
new staff is made up as follows: Ethwell Man-
son, chief composer and director of staff; M.
B. Lee, lyric editor; Sig. G. 1>. Lombardi, ar-
ranger of band and orchestra; L. M. Firestone,
director of song advertising; Margaret Hancock
Viers, director of song publicity; Rhue Gill,
traveling professional manager; Florence Tosch
and Robert Long, directors of professional de-
partment, and Lila McBride, director of phono-
graph and player roll department.
L. Wolfe Gilbert, for the firm of Gilbert &
Friedland, Inc., recently accepted for publica-
tion a number called "Afghanistan," described
as an Asiatic fox-trot, written by Wm. Wilander
and Harry Donnelly. The song appears to be a
hit in the making despite the fact that the piano
copies are only now being rushed to press. E.
Z. Xutting, of the F. W. Woolworth syndicate,
has already given Gilbert & Friedland one of
the biggest general orders ever placed for a
popular number.
A dance arrangement of "Afghanistan" by J.
S. Glickman was recently, tried out by Landau's
orchestra at Churchill's, New York, and Lanin's
orchestra at "Roseland." In each place it ap-
parently made an immediate hit. The publishers
look for it to be one of the biggest orchestra
successes of the present season.
«~ BEGIN NATIONAL CAMPAIGN
Irving Berlin, Inc., will shortly inaugurate
a big national advertising campaign in behalf
of their new song, "When My Baby Smiles."
It is understood that over $35,000 in national
publicity in addition to the appropriation of
various other channels of exploitation will be
involved in this big publicity drive. The entire
Berlin organization will be behind the number
and it is expected that it will be exploited as a
number of the hit class in a very short space
of time.
Sam Fox, of the Sam Fox Pub. .Co., of Cleve-
land, O., has recently been receiving the con-
gratulations of his friends on the arrival of a
baby girl in his home.
