MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
STRONG DEMAND ON PACIFIC COAST
NEW BILL AFFECTS PUBLISHERS
Sales of Sheet Music Continue Lively—Sherman,
Clay & Co. Considering British Offer—John
D. Broder, Inc., Increases Stock
Measure Introduced in New York Legislature
Provides for Keeping Record of All Sales for
Inspection of Authors and Composers
• SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., February 21.—The de-
The following is an amendment to the Gen-
eral Business Law of New York State as re-
cently introduced by Senator Walker and will
have a bearing, if passed, on the relationship
between the author, composer and publisher of
sheet music, among other things:
mand for sheet music in all the Pacific Coast
cities seems to be keeping up in a remarkable
manner, and the new supplies of post-war songs
and standard numbers that have come from the
East are meeting with a full share of popularity
to say nothing of the success that has attended
the publications of the Western houses.
Sherman, Clay & Co., through the manager
of their music publishing department, Edward
P. Little, reports that the company's own catalog
is getting stronger steadily. Their recent hit,
"Tears," promises to beat all records, and they
have just put out another song, "Behind the
Silken Veil," by Richard Coburn and Vincent
Rose, which looks very good. Sherman, Clay &
Co. are now considering several offers from
British publishers to publish their songs in Great
Britain on a royalty basis, and expect to an-
nounce their decision shortly.
John D. Broder, head of John D. Broder, Inc.,
who are the sole owners of the sheet music
department in the Byron Mauzy store at 250
Stockton street, have enlarged their stock of
popular music recently, taking on a number of
new songs published by Remick, Fox and other
houses. They have also added a number of new
standard folios. William Purcell, formerly an
important member of the department staff, has
received his discharge from the army and taken
up his new duties to the general satisfaction of
all concerned.
A number of sheet music salesmen, represent-
ing prominent Eastern houses, have been on the
Coast recently, and practically without exception
they have gone home with substantial orders
for their numbers.
PROVING RECORD=BREAKING HIT
"Beautiful Ohio" One of Most Popular Waltzes
of the Season
As the writer of "Beautiful Ohio" Mary Earl
will go down in musical history as the composer
of one of the most popular waltz numbers of the
day. It is one of the sensations of the present
season and its sale promises to be one of the
largest in the history of music publishing.
Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., Inc., the publishers,
can hardly run the presses fast enough to meet
the demands, and according to reports from the
music roll and talking machine record companies
it is almost impossible to manufacture this song
and waltz at a fast enough rate to meet, the
public's desires.

GOOD MUSIC DEMAND IN WEST
Bob Harding, traveling representative of T.
B. Harms & Francis, Day & Hunter, has just
returned from a six weeks' trip visiting the trade
in the Middle West. He was well pleased with
the results obtained while away and states the
larger trade centers in the territory visited are
feeling a good demand for music.
"UP IN MABEL'S ROOM"
M. Witmark & Sons are the publishers of a
new comedy song, entitled "Up in Mabel's
Room." It seems to be quite a success as, since
its original introduction in vaudeville by Kramer
& Morton, a number of other vaudeville singers
have placed it in their repertoire.
SONG EXPLOITED WITH PICTURE
In connection with the motion picture, "Heart
of Humanity," Waterson, Berlin & Snyder have
issued a song by that name and it is being
featured and exploited in conjunction with the
picture.
