the importance o f posters as an inspirati on and
in terpretat ion of patriotis m, that the fam ous
"lVarseillaise " was illspired by a contemporary
pester. Th e va lue of th e poster whi ch to -day
is recogniz ed in ev ery line of wo rk was a lso
k,!o wn as far back as 1792, w hen th e Mayor o f
Strassburg issned a proclamation and had it
d i,p layed throughout the city, under the cap­
tion "To a rms, citizens!"
