announces a new military march entitled "Spirit
of France." This number is described as com-
panion piece to "Pershing's Crusaders," which
was issued in the late fall of last year, the sale
of which has been quite large.
The composition is the work of Mr. Paull
himself, who was led to write the number after
reading an account of the message of General
Foch to Marshal Joffre at the first battle of the
Marne which stated: "My right wing is re-
treating; my left is broken; 1 am attacking with
the center."
The number is being published with a special-
ly designed title page in five colors showing
Joan of Arc on a white horse in spirit form,
leading hosts of marching French soldiers, Gen-
eral Foch's message appearing underneath.
A NEW COMEDY SONG SUCCESS

This was the means of attracting large num-

B. & 0 . DEPARTMENT SUCCEEDS
Wisdom of Gilbert & Friedland in Specializing
in That Department Is Proven by the Excel-
lent Results Now Being Obtained
L. Wolfe Gilbert and Anatol Friedland, the
well-known'team of vaudeville entertainers, song
writers and song publishers, should be proud of
the progress they have made in so short a space
of time since entering the music publishing field.
Starting out with the song success, "Are You
From Heaven," they have gradually built up a
catalog of merit and one that is being recog-
nized by both the profession and the trade.
One of the best moves they have made in
recent months was when Maxwell Silver, the
general manager of the company, and Wolfe
Gilbert decided to pay the strictest attention to
the development of their band and orchestra
department, so to-day it is one of the most im-

IVOR NOVELLO IN NEW YORK
Ivor Novello, composer of "Keep the Home
Fires Burning," and other war and pre-war suc-
cesses, arrived in New York" last week from
England on the "Mauretania" and will spend
some time in this country. Mr. Novello holds a
commission in the British Army, having served
with the Royal Flying Corps. His headquarters
are with Chappell & Co., his publishers.
The comedy song, "Up in Mable's Room," is
one of the most popular numbers at the present
time with the vaudeville singers. The public
has also taken kindly to this song and it prom-
ises to be one of the big successes in this sea-
son's catalog of M. Witmark & Sons, the pub-
lishers.
