Emphasize the Part Music Is

Constantly Calling Attention to the Value of Music As a Most Important Factor in Helping to
Win the War—Examples Showing How Publicity Along this Line May Be Obtained
Ever since the entering of this nation into
the great world war, there has been urgent need
of impressing upon Government officials and the
American public alike the true relation which
music bears to the successful prosecution of the

when many well meaning, but misguided, patri-
ots were preaching the doctrine of absolute econ-
omy, musical instruments were listed by many
of these self-appointed leaders of public thought
as being non-essential. Even men of the caliber
of Frank E. Vanderlip held that music and the
means for producing the same were unnecessary,
and could easily be eliminated from national life.
ing down upon the music industry. There were,
however, a number of men in the industry whose
foresight and vision were sufficient to cause
them to see that modern warfare is in the last
analysis merely a case of figliting until the
morale of one of the combatants cracks under
the strain of privation and hardship. Such be-
ing the case, it has naturally come to pass that
increasingly greater importance has been at-
tached to music, because of its inestimable value
LUSIC, next to religion, is the mind's
greatest solace, and also its greatest inspira-

lofty aspirations find vent in music, and
that music, in turn, helps to inspire such
aspirations in others. Military men agree
that music is essential to soldiers both in
camp and in action; the "Marseillaise" is
worth a million men to France.
Music is
not less essential to those the soldiers leave
behind them.

The reputation and caliber of those men, like
Vanderlip, who held this view regarding music,
were so great that only the keenest visioned men
of the music trade dared at first to take up the
cudgels on behalf of music and the music in-
dustry in a truly vigorous way.
In the early days of the war a large portion
of the trade did not realize the significance and
value of music in wartime sufficiently well to
