TO INCREASE PIG IRON PRICES
Steel Producers Preparing Arguments in Favor
of Increase in Price Next Month
Steel producers are preparing to present
strong arguments in favor of increased pig iron
prices when they appear at the meeting of the
steel committee of the American Iron and Steel
Institute and the price fixing committee of the
War Industries Hoard to he held in Washing-
ton on September 18, to discuss possible price
revision on October 1. The Government is
said to be opposed to any change from present
schedules.
Merchant furnaces contend they cannot con-
tinue on the present basis and will likely ask for
$2 a ton advance in pig iron. In the event
that the increase is granted, it would afford
grounds for a proportionate advance in steel
products, it is pointed out.
I ron output continues to fall short of require-
ments and furnaces are pressed to meet urgent
