MATAWAN STEEL & IRON CO. BUSY
L. C. Gorsuch, Now in Charge of Extensive
Piano Plate Plant, Tells of Changes Which
Have Resulted in More Efficient Service—
Henry Wickham Now in the Aviation Service
"We are very busy at the Matawan Steel &
Iron Co. plant," stated L. C. Gorsuch, who is
now in charge, to The Review. "We are work-
ing to our full capacity. In shipping our loca-
tion makes us extremely fortunate. We are
the nearest plate manufacturing concern to the
great piano manufacturing district of New York,
being situated only twenty-six miles away. We
have experienced very little difficulty thus far
in making shipments. When the weather mod-
erates and the freight boats are resumed be-
tween Keyport and New York our shipping fa-
cilities will be absolutely perfect.
"Of course, there is a certain scarcity of
labor and materials, but we have been success-
ful in meeting the obstacles as they arise." Mr.
Gorsuch, who has been factory manager of the
Wickham Co., of Cleveland, and who is endowed
with years of experience in the manufacturing
of piano plates, has come to the Matawan plant
to take entire charge. He thus relieves Henry
Wickham, president of the concern, who has
joined the mechanical end of the Aviation Corps
at Dayton, O., where he is dedicating his tech-
nical and mechanical knowledge to his country

in order to do his bit towards the successful
carrying on of the war.
It is announced that the executive end of the
company will remain the same. Mr. Gorsuch
stated that his plans for the future might be
briefly contained in two words—Constant Im-
provement; and this means enlarging the plant,
adding to the machinery and increasing the ef-
ficiency throughout.
Various important improvements have been
made at the factory during the past year. A
new office building has been built, and also a
new warehouse about four times the size of the
former building. Through efficient arrangement
the output of the foundry has been increased
one-third, although covering no more floor space.
The land owned by the Matawan Steel & Iron
Co. occupies about twelve acres. This permits
of room for expansion. The size of the land
was brought forcibly home when a fence sim-
ilar to those used by ammunition plants was re-
cently erected about the premises costing in the
neighborhood of $4,000. It is hoped to double
the plant in the spring.
Mr. Gorsuch is pleased with the favorable
comments that he has heard regarding the high
quality of the Matawan plate. He said in part:
"I wish it were possible for everybody inter-
ested to witness the detailed process of manu-
facturing a piano plate. It would take over a
day and even then a superficial knowledge would
only be gained. Very few manufacturers in
looking at a finished high-grade piano plate
realize fully the care and exacting detail neces-
sary to its production. Running through it very
briefly, I might describe it in this way. The
pig iron is placed on elevators and dumped into
the cupolas. With a mixture of coke it is then
dumped into the furnace and when molten con-
veyed by means of trolleys and poured into the
molds. It is then chipped when cool and car-
ried to the rumbling machine, where it is
smoothed of! and then drilled. It is then care-
fully compared with the pattern and sent to the
spraying bench. It is there filled and baked,
then sprayed and baked again, then japanned and

baked again, then all blemishes are rubbed off.
After it has passed the pin boys it is bronzed
and varnished and baked, then varnished again
and baked as well, and then shipped. This but
briefly describes the detail entailed.
Careful
inspection and supervision throughout the proc-
ess is maintained."
Mr. Gorsuch is optimistic over the new year
we are in and is carefully watching every indi-
cation to meet any condition that might arise.
