"BLUES" MUSIC CLUE TO ROBBERY
Selection of Records Made by Thief in Chicago
Talking Machine Store Enables Police to Fol-
low the Trail Without Hesitation
His fondness for music of the blues order,
probably natural with a colored gentleman, is
responsible for the fact that Private Burch,
Company G. Eighth Illinois Infantry, is being
held in Chicago for the robbery of a local
phonograph store, when machines and rec-
ords to the value of $2,500 were stolen. The
list of records taken included one dozen each
of "Darktown Strutters Ball," "Are You From
Dixie" and "Livery Stable Blues," and two dozen
each of "Hesitation Blues" and "It Takes a
Long, Tall Brown-skin Gal to Make a Preacher
Lay His Bible Down."
After one perusal of the list the police began
to search for a gentleman of color. The trail
of "blues" followed that of the Illinois Regi-
ment direct from Chicago to Texas, and negro
girls had records to spare, all presented to them
by Private Burch. He is now reposing in a place
where the blues are mental but not melodious.

OLD SONQ SUCCESS IN NEW DRESS
WAR SONG CONTEST INTERESTING
Elaborate Title Page Produced for Revival of
"Break the News to Mother," by Chas. K.
Harris—Writes Other Patriotic Songs
Idea Works Out Very Successfully at the Fifth
Avenue Theatre and Will Be Featured at
Other Theatres in Metropolitan District
When Clias. K. Harris revived his former
wartime success, "Break the News to Mother,"
one of the first things he did was to have de-
signed a handsome new title page to lend fresh-
The War Song Contest, which was held in
the Fifth Avenue Theatre during the first five
days of last week, proved of interest to the song
writers and publishers, as well as to theatrical
managers, and incidentally served to prove a fair
attraction for the audiences. Three new songs
were featured nightly and their relative merits
were decided by the volume of applause ac-
corded each. The songs featured on the various
days were as follows:
Monday: "It's a Long Way to Berlin" (Feist),
"Going Over" (Morris), "Somewhere in France"
(Witmark).
Tuesday: "I Don't Know Where I'm Going"
(H. Von Tilzer), "Hello, America" (Fischer &
McCarty), "Set Aside Your Tears for Laughter"
(Stern).
Wednesday: "Man in Battle" (Harms), "I
May Be Gone for a Long, Long Time" (Broad-
way), "Send Me Away With a Smile" (Pian-
tadosi).
Thursday: "Just Break the News to Mother"
(revival) (Harris), "Joan of Arc" (Waterson,
Berlin & Snyder), "Pray for Sunshine, but Al-
ways Be Prepared for Rain" (Kalmar & Puck).
Friday: "So Long, Mother" (Remick), "Good-
bye, My Little Lady" (Shapiro-Bernstein).
The war song contest idea will be extended
to take in theatres in Harlem, Brooklyn and
other sections of the city. It is estimated that
fifteen war songs featured during the five days
represent about 1 per cent, of the number that
have been written so far.

ness to the number. The new title page is re-
produced herewith and gives an excellent idea
of its elaborate character. "Break the News to
Mother" is now being featured very extensively
in vaudeville, and is also selling unusually well.
Mr. Harris has also written several other patri-
otic numbers that have been successful and
which include "I'll See You Later, Yankee Land,"
and "Yankee, He's There, All There."

Percy Wcnrich and Dolly Connelly will
shortly leave on a vaudeville tour. Their first
opening for the season will be in Milwaukee
where they will feature a new song, "Cherry
