music he now sells it in the shape of music rolls,
One of the prominent figures in the world of
popular music a very few years ago was being general manager of the Rose Valley Co.,
Johann C. Sehmid, who as a member of the successful music roll manufacturers in Media,

interests of his friends among the music pub-

royalties for mechanical reproduction rights.
He declares that selling music rolls has some ad-

"Any Place Is Heaven If You Are Near Me"
Chas. Harrison, popular tenor, who has
made a decided success as a singer of songs in

unusually excellent results. Mr. Harrison has
MANAGERS TO FIGHT COMPOSERS
Organize to Protect Themselves Against Pay-
ment of Performing Royalties
Despite the recent decision of the U. S. Su-
preme Court upholding the rights of the copy-
right owner regarding the public performance
of his music, it appears that the demand of the
American Society of Authors, Composers and
Publishers .for the payment of substantial per-
forming royalties by restaurant, cabaret and
theatre managers will not be met without some
argument.
It is stated that the United Man-
agers' Protective Association is mobilizing its
forces to fight the royalty demands of the so-
ciety. It is the claim of the managers that the
Supreme Court decision covers only music writ-
ten especially for a production or for a vaudeville
act and does not affect music written for and
purchasable in the open market.
Johann C. Sehmid
posed a number of distinctly popular songs and
instrumental selections, among them being the
hit: "Garden of Dreams." Mr. Sehmid also
shone as a composer and compiler of teaching
editions, his thorough knowledge of music well
qualifying him for that work.
Sometime ago Mr. Sehmid dropped out of
sight of his friends in the sheet music trade, and
