ACTIVITY AT PRATT, READ FACTORY
DEEP RIVER, CONN., July 24.—The Pratt, Read &
Co.'s factory, which had been partly closed, ow-
ing to the mid-summer inventory, and some im-
provements which were made to the plant, has
again resumed full operation, and is now run-
ning to capacity to supply the increasing de-
mand for piano keys which is being received
by the firm. William B. Stevens, secretary of
the concern, is now summering in Goshen,
where his family is located.
HIGEL CO. ANNOUNCES REMOVAL
. The Otto Higel Co., manufacturer of Metal-
nola player actions, has sent out formal an-
nouncements to the trade of the removal of its
jplant from Buffalo to the recently finished fac-
tory at 238th street and Bronx boulevard, New
York ,City. The new factory will be devoted
exclusively to the manufacture of the Metalnola
action*. The machinery is rapidly being in-
stalled in the new plant, which will be in full
operation shortly.

Provides for Moving Pedals
Player Into Playing Position
on
WASHINGTON, D. C, July 24.—Wessell, Nickel
& Gross, New York, are the owners through
assignment by Paul Schwarze, Astoria, N. Y.,
of Patent No. 1,1 "-1,540, for a player-piano pedal
device.
In pneumatic player-pianos the pedals by
which the power bellows are operated are now
commonly arranged so that they may bi
folded within the casing of the piano and a
panel or panels are arranged to slide across the
opening in which they stand while in operative
position, so that, when the piano is not in use,
the interior shall be protected from dusfr and
the exterior shall present a more attractive ap-
pearance. Usually the pedals are moved into
and out of operative position and the sliding
panel is moved in one direction or the other
by the application of the foot or the hand, al-
though mechanical means have been devised for
the movement of the panel or panels and also
for the release of the pedals so that they may
fall into operative position by gravity or under
the influence of a spring.
The present invention is concerned -rfwith
means for moving the pedals into and out of
operative position and for moving the panels
to their closed or open position and the im-
proved means are preferably so constructed
that through the movement of a single handle
or other manually operated device the desired
movements of the pedals into or out of opera-
tive position and of the panel or panels may be
effected, provisions being made whereby the
movements of the pedals and the panels must
take place successively and cannot take place
simultaneously.
