"BETTY" COMESJTO BROADWAY
Clever English Musical Comedy Is Well Re-
ceived—Music Proves Strong Feature
"Betty," the latest musical comedy from
Daly's Theatre, London, was presented to New
Yorkers for the first time at the Globe Theatre
on Tuesday evening of this week, and was ac-
corded a reception as great as that given on its
first presentation in Rochester recently. Fred-
crick Lonsdale and Gladys Unger are the
librettists, and the music is by Paul A. Rubens.
In the first place "Betty" brings back to
Broadway Raymond Hitchcock, and in it he
finds a most desirable vehicle for the presen-
tation of his various talents. To round out
the cast Chas. Dillingham also brought from
London two pretty English musical comedy ac-
tresses, Ivy Sawyer and Eileen Dennes, who,
with Joseph Santley and others, provide a most
generous support to Mr. Hitchcock.
The music of the piece was accepted by the
New York critics as one of its strong features,
and there are several numbers that promise to
be heard along Broadway for an indefinite time
to come, among them being "Cinderella," sung
by Miss Sawyer, who also displays her ability
with another song, "I Feel So Happy"; two
numbers in the singing of which Mr. Santley
and Miss Sawyer collaborate, the songs being
"Dance With Me," a clever waltz song, and
"If It Was True." A popular selection of the
topical order is "We Men Ought to Combine,"
sung by Messrs. Hitchcock, Page and Lowrie.
There are also several excellent interpolated
numbers, including "Spilling the Beans," a fox
trot, composed by Wm. M. Daly. The score
is published by Chappell & Co.
NEW "SILENT SALESMAN" POPULAR
Latest Plan for Featuring "Most Popular" Series
of Music Books Making Strong Appeal to the
Dealer—Details of the Proposition
The new "silent salesman" or revolving dis-
play rack, announced some time ago by Hinds,
Hayden & Eklredge, has proven decidedly popu-
lar with the dealers who have been handling the
"Most Popular" books, together with those who,
in connection with the new rack, realize that
there was a new opportunity in the music field.
The revolving rack is designed to feature
sixty-seven different books of the "Most Popu-

is readily seen by any one entering the store,
and not only save counter and shelf room, but
aids the customer in inspecting the books and
in making his ov n selections. The cabinet is
constructed of metai throughout.
Under the proposition made by Hinds, Hayden
& Eldredge, the cabinet, together with the com-
plete equipment of books, may be obtained for
$20, less than the cost of the cabinet alone to
the dealer, were he to buy it separately. The
books supplied with the cabinet are worth alone
at wholesale prices $22.40 and have a retail
value of $43.10, thus giving the rack to the
dealer free.
The books supplied with the rack include:
Home Songs, Popular Hymns, Mother Goose
Songs, College Songs, Plantation Songs, Songs
for Every Occasion, Songs of Patriotism, New
College Songs, New Songs for Male Quartets,

A NEW OPERETTA SUCCESS
Both Book and Music of "Miss Springtime"
Unusually Satisfying
The present theatrical season in New York
has been notable for the number of successful
musical comedies and operettas that have been
presented thus far, one of the latest being
''Miss Springtime," which was presented last
week at the New Amsterdam Theatre unden
the direction of Klaw & Erlanger. In many
respects the chief charm of the new production
lies in the music, which is by Emmerich Kal-
man, composer of "Sari" and other successes,
but the book itself is also unusually clever,
thereby making an excellent combination.
The excellent cast is headed by Sara Petrass,
a new prima donna from Budapest who is not
only attractive to the eye but sings well.
The vocal honors go to George MacFarlane

and Charles Meakins, although Jack Hazzard
has a lot of songs to sing. Mr. Hazzard, in the
matter of voice, is Lew Hearn's only rival, but
when he talked his songs, as he usually did, he
was most effective. Also he supplies most of
the comedy and does it admirably.
Mr. MacFarlane used his splendid baritone
voice finely in a number of songs. Among the
best were "The Love Monopoly," "The Garden
of Romance," a duet with Miss I'etrass, and
"Some One." Mr. Meakins also sang well sev-
eral numbers, including "Throw Me a Rose"
and "A Bid for Sympathy." Mr. Hazzard's
songs consisted of "This Is-the Existence," "Life
Is a Game of Bluff" and "When You're Full of
Talk." Miss O'Ramey also has a song and a
chorus, called "A Very Good Girl on Sunday."
The lyric of this, as in many of the other songs,
is cleverly done.
Guy Bolton did the book and made a good
job of it, being ably assisted by P. G. Wode-
house and Herbert Reynolds, the lyricists.
T. B. Harms & Francis Day & Hunter publish
the music.
