Arrangements have been made between
Joseph W. Stern & Co. and the attorney for the
late Louis F. Muir, whereby the former concern
will publish a song written by L. Wolfe Gilbert
and Mr. Muir before the latter's death under
the title of "The Trail to Lonesome Valley."
The royalties brought by the number will be
turned over to Mrs. Flory Anne Muir, widow
of the composer.

Away From the Beaten Path
Each number printed on two plates, so
that they can be played from beginning to
end and over and over without turning a page.
According to the representative of a promi-
nent concern there is a new field open for com-
posers in writing a specialty for the player-
piano. As it is now the majority of composi-
tions written for hand playing must be re-ar-
ranged for the music roll in order to get the
desirable brilliancy and effect. The player-
piano with its eighty-eight pneumatics naturally
offers a range for music production far beyond
the ten fingers of even the most expert musi-
cians. Music formerly capable of being per-
formed only by orchestra can, through the
player-piano, be used as piano pieces. Four-hand
and six-hand arrangements become quite simple
when there are eighty-eight fingers to play them.
Some of the music roll companies have on vari-
ous occasions bought outright musical compo-
sitions particularly suited to their needs. They
may offer a new field for the composer who
wants to try his ability on intricate and elab-
orate compositions.

GORDON TO UNDERGO OPERATION
Hamilton A. Gordon, manager of the estate
of Hamilton S. Gordon, publisher, has been con-
fined to his home for several days, and will
undergo a minor operation. It is thought, how-
ever, that Mr. Hamilton will be about again in
the course of a week.
NEW HOWLEY SONG A HIT
The P. J. Howley Music Co. announces their
song "The Girl With the Red Cross on Her
Sleeve" is going fine. The Victor list of records
for July have the above song as one of their
numbers. Mr. Howley says he is looking for a
good summer business.
