CONDUCTED BY B. B. WILSON
IMPORTANT MATTERS TO BE CONSIDERED AT CONVENTION
R. W. Heffelfinger, in Letter to Trade, Outlines Program of Discussions to be Held at Gather-
ing of Music Dealers in New York on June 14-16—Large Attendance Expected
Matters for Consideration at the Annual
Convention of the National Association
of Sheet Music Dealers.
1. Prices and Discounts:
A—Desirable increases in retail selling
prices.
B—Whether sheet music sold by the pub-
lishers at J^2 and 20 or y 2 and % should
not be retailed at 40% or 1/3 off instead of
at y 2 off.
C—An agreement as to a uniform retail
discount on net sheet music of American
publishers.
D—The question of securing uniform ac-
tion on the proposition to sell "Library"
editions at one-third off including the
co-operation of the publishers to enforce it.
2. General Conduct of the Business:
Exchange of ideas as to:
A—Formulation of a plan to secure data
as to the average cost of conducting a sheet
. music business.
B—As to the average gross profit therein.
C—Stock records and how to keep them.
D—Disposal of unsaleable stock.
E—Formation of a National Co-operative
Credit Bureau.
3. Special Matters for the General Better-
ment of the Trade:
A—Considerable of the proposed reduc-
tion of the size of sheet music to that of
the Library editions. It is recommended
on account of the saving to the dealer in
transportation charges and ultimately in
shelf room; on account of the greater
convenience in handling, and on account
of the saving of 20% in the amount of
paper used.
B—How to reduce the quantity of new
issues and to more effectively introduce the
meritorious new publications.

The following information regarding the com-
ing convention of the National Association of
Sheet Music Dealers has been sent to the trade
by R. W. Heffelfinger, secretary and treasurer
of the Association:
"You are invited to attend, or to send a repre-
sentative to, the third annual convention of the
National Association of Sheet Music Dealers
which will be held at the Hotel Breslin, New
York, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
June 14 to 16 inclusive.
"This meeting will furnish a most excellent
opportunity for the exchange of views and ex-
periences with the leading men in the trade, and
it certainly should be of the greatest value to
all taking part therein. A report of the growth
of the association showing the splendid co-
operation it has been receiving from the dealers
and publishers alike will be presented.
"The general increase of prices in all lines
of merchandise in the past year has prepared
the public to expect the same in the field of
music; the advance that will soon be necessary
in our business should not merely cover the in-
creased cost to the dealer, but should be made
to yield him that fair profit which he has not,
as a general rule, received in the past. The
present opportunity is one that will probably
never come again. Let us grasp it now!
"The convention will also act upon the ques-
tion of securing a greater difference between
the school or teacher's price and the dealer's
rate, believing that the school quotations of all
publishers should be at least 50 per cent, higher
than their dealers' price.
NAME BUT NOT POLICY IS CHANGED
Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge, Inc., Issue An-
nouncement Regarding Status of Business
In announcing the change in their corporate
name from Hinds, Noble & Eldredge to Hinds,
Hayden & Eldredge, Inc., the well-known pub-
lishers of the "Most Popular Series" of music
books and also sheet music of the better sort,
state that they are in no way connected with
the jobbing house of Hinds & Noble (now
Noble & Noble), are publishers exclusively and
deal only in their own publications. There will
be no change in the policy of the house.
"In urging the consideration of the matter
of the reduction of the size of sheet music to
that of library editions, the association believes
that the saving in the amount of paper used,
and in the transportation charges paid by the
dealer are of equal importance. We recognize
that the interests of the publisher and dealer
are mutual and it is the ultimate aim of the
association to work to secure the closest co-
operation and good will between the two great
branches of the trade.
"We feel that the action of the various popu-
lar publishers during the last year in removing
a large percentage of their hits from the ten-
cent class has been directly in line with the
suggestions and recommendations made at the
last convention. We urge the continuation and
extension of this practice as giving more profit
to the dealer and to the publisher alike.
"The convention will begin the day following
that of the Music Publishers' Association and is
less than a week preceding that of the National
Association of Piano Merchants and the Na-
tional Piano Manufacturers' Association.
"Your co-operation in, and attendance at, the
convention will be of material help for the ad-
vancement of the trade as a whole. May we not
expect it?
"If you are not already a member we should
be glad to have your house enroll with the as-
sociation. A single accomplishment, like the
reduction of freight rates secured by the asso-
ciation since our last meeting will repay your
membership fee many fold. May we not have
your co-operation and assistance in a matter
that is so important to the trade as a whole?"
The association now has a membership of
about fifty representative concerns in all sec-
tions of the country.
"UNCLE SAM" SONG FOR SCHOOL
The children of Public School No. 52, at
Kelly and St. John avenues, the Bronx, sang
"We're All for Uncle Sam," published by the
Estate of Hamilton S. Gordon, at their grad-
uating exercises this week. The children were
costumed in red, white and blue and all carried
small American flags.
A IIQW dance folio is the latest announcement
of Leo Feist, Inc. This is a new addition to the
"World's Best Music Folio," and is called "In
the Limelight." The book contains the late suc-
cesses, in One Steps, Two Steps and Fox Trots.
A TIMELY MARCH NUMBER
"All America," by Zamecnik, Proving One of
the Features of the Sam Fox Co. Catalog
JERQUE H.REMKM
A most timely publication is "All America," a
brilliant march by J. S. Zamecnik and one of
the features of the Sam Fox Co.'s catalog. The
piece has a martial swing to it and is being
well received throughout the country. There is
a special demand for the number for use in
Decoration Day celebrations throughout the
country. Moreover, there are big orders which
tell the story.
