WHAT'S THE USE?
As Banks M. Davison, of the White-Smith
Music Publishing Co., Boston, Mass., says: "Once
in a while we may draw a blank on our mailing
list, as witness the following interesting contribu-
tion recently received:
"My knowledge of music is so limited and my
income and voice so poor that T am not permitted
to imbibe any new music. I have to content my-
self with singing the "Old Oaken Bucket' and 'Old
Black Joe.' My specialty is singing at funerals.
I have made two sit up in their coffins. I eat
canary seed as a breakfast food, but my voice still
lacks the sand-papered effect."

THAT the Music Publishers' Board of Trade
has begun the discussion of the wholesale price of
popular music.
THAT the subject should provide material for
discussion at the coming meetings of that body
throughout the winter without fear that a final de-
cision will put an end to it.
THAT Elmo Mack, a vaudeville actor, has pur-
chased the catalog of the Bigelow Publishing Co..

THAT the purchaser will probably find that it is
easier to secure professional copies free than to
sell regular copies for real money.
THAT from the present announcements of the the-
atrical managers the publishers of production
music will have a busy if not profitable season.
THAT the catalog without a song about Honolulu
in it is apparently behind the times and not in
touch with competitors.
THAT the controversy regarding the origin of the
"O'Reilly" song still continues and has finally
reached the pages of the more or less conservative
New York Times. One correspondent claims that
a song of that title and in many respects similar
to the "O'Reilly" songs mentioned in the news
dispatches appears under an Oliver Ditson Co.

THAT the Court of Appeals has reversed the de-
cision of the lower courts in favor of Edward
Laska in his suit against Charles K. Harris for
alleged breach of contract, and has granted a new
trial.
J. T. ROACH ONJTRIP TO COAST.
J. T. Roach, manager of the music department of
Hinds, Noble & Eldredge, publishers of the "Most
Popular" series of music and song books, left on
Monday of this week on a business trip to the
Pacific Coast in the interest of the publicaiions of
his house. Mr. Roach will make a circuit of the
West, visiting the principal cities en route both
going and coming, and has several new volumes
of exceeding interest to offer to the dealers, one
of them being a very handsome and elaborately il-
lustrated volume of "Mother Goose" songs.
TO PRODUCE "GIRL WHO SMILES."
On next Monday night "The Girl Who Smiles,"
a new operetta by Paul Herve, Jean Briquet and
Adolph Philipp, authors and composers of "Adele"
and "The Midnight Girl," will be presented for the
first time at the Lyric Theater under the manage-
ment of the Shuberts. Remick & Co. will publish
the music of the piece.

DENVER, COL., August 2.—Following the removal
of the Irion Piano Co. to its new quarters at 1516
California street, this city, the sheet music business
of Miss M. L. Casey has been consolidated with
the piano business. Miss Casey, who will remain
in charge of the department, is well known to the
local trade and has a large following among local
music teachers and musicians in general.
