various buildings have been designed in accordance
with the architectural spirit shown in the old mis-
sions—the Spanish Colonial style. The mild cli-
mate has mad: it possible to produce an orange
orchard, a tea plantation and a wonderful growth
of vines and shrubs that.practically cover some of
the structures and give them the appearance of age
and permanence. The old Spanish idea is preserved

The entire exposition is devoted primarily to the

culturally and industrially, although the rest of the
country is well represented in the exhibits.
The opening of the Panama Canal has had a new
and real effect on the commercial importance of
San Diego, for this city is the first port of call for
vessels coming through the canal from the Atlantic
