declare himself or herself proficient and accept pu-
pils is well known," says Mr. Ash. "There is no
State or national law to protect the qualified teach-
er, or the public. The time has passed when any
sort of an instrument is considered 'good enough'
to learn on, and any self-styled 'professor' or mu-
sic teacher 'good enough' because of cheap ser-
v.ces. The day of the imposter and 'faker' is pass-
ing rapidly."

LIVELY NEW MARCH BY PIANO MAN.
The "Whirlwind" March and Two-Step a Rat-
tling Good Number.
The "Whirlwind," march and two-step, composed
by W. J. Carkeek, a well-known piano salesman and
manager, at present located on the Pacific Coast,
has just been published by Sherman, Clay & Co.,
San Francisco, and is being featured extensively in
that section. Mr. Carkeek has composed other in-
strumental numbers, including "Arizona Two-Step,"
"Loved and Lost," a song; "Derby Two-Step," and
other numbers. The "Whirlwind" is a rattling
good march with a particularly pleasing trio and
should win a full share of success. The piece is
dedicated to J. H. Dundore, manager for Sherman,
Clay & Co. in Portland, Ore.

UNION OF MUSIC TEACHERS
To Shut Out the Incompetents, Proposed in
Brooklyn, N. Y.—Meeting Called to Organize.
Invitations have been sent out to music teachers
of Brooklyn, N. Y., to meet and form a union
for the purpose of protecting capable and quali-
fied teachers against the incompetents. Ernest
A. Ash, who sent out the invitations, declares that

The present demand for Hawaiian music has
prompted the Century Music Publishing Co. to
make a special feature of the charming Hawaiian
number, "Aloha Oe," composed by Queen Lihuo-
kalani, and which therefore can boast of authentic-
ity as to character. The English version of the
piece, by Charles Earle, is well known and very
popular, and as a feature of the Century edition
the piece should prove decidedly successful.

A CYCLE OF ARABIAN SONGS.
A cycle of four Arabian songs by Wm. Dich-
mont has just been issued in most artistic form by
the Oliver Ditson Co., of Boston, Mass. These
four songs, which are entitled "The Bedouin's
Bride," "From my Tent," "Song of Jami" and
"Slave Song," are of great musical merit. The
composer has been successful in securing that Ori-
ental atmosphere in keeping with the words which
lends a charm that is irresistible. The volume is
beautifully produced with a cover design that is
a veritable work of art.

SOUSA FEATURES "SHADOWLAND."
One of the numbers featured in the program of
Sousa's concert.at the New York Hippodrome last
Sunday was "Shadowland," the del : ghtful morceau
by Gilbert, and which is published by Leo Feist,
Inc. It was one of the best received numbers of
the evening.
The campaign for new members being carried on
by the Greater New York Music Publishers and
Dealers' Association is meeting with much success.
