A Steinway Art Grand at the Panama-
Pacific Exposition
Visitors to the Panama-Pacific Exposition will find in the New York State
Building a Steinway piano which represents the artistic excellence developed by
the Steinway Art Department.
A description of this special art product will be interesting.
The case of this in-
strument has eight sup-
ports in the form of del-
icately carved and ta-
pering reeded columns
connected by a stretch-
er that curves from sup-
port to support. The
capitals of these col-
u m n s h a v e spread-
ing trusses on either
side, with a square
cap above the carved
egg and dart ornament
around the neck of the
columns. On the rim
are pilasters above each
column and square cap,
surmounted by another
square. These are con-
nected a r o u n d t h e
piano by a frieze of
alternating r o s e t t e s
and triple flutes. The
panels between the pi-
lasters have counter-
sunk and raised mold-
ings, forming vertical
and horizontal ovals.
The vertical ovals have
carved musical troph-
ies, festoons, garlands
of flowers and ribbons.
On the horizontal ovals,
of which there are
three, one on each side
and one on the end, are
painted original clas-
sical figure subjects in
natural colors.
