SECURE NEW "KNITTING" SONG.
Chapped &. Co., Ltd., Get Rights in United
States for Clever Number Based on War-
Time Fad—Has Tuneful Melody.
Chappell & Co. have just secured the rights in
the United States for "Knitling," a captivating march
song by Muriel Bruce and Baron Aliotti, and
which as its title indicates, refers to the craze of
knitting for the soldiers that prevails in the United
States as well as in the countries at war. The
chorus of the number is particularly tuneful and
should insure its success. The words of the chorus
arc:
Knitting, knitt" g, knitting.
With Khaki woo and grey,
Mufflers, socks nd balaclava caps,
'They arc knittii g day liy day;
Knitting, knittir: g, knitting,
With a prayer ii ev'ry row,
That the ones they hold in their hearts so dear,
May be guarded as they go.

MREVIEWflEARS
THAT two local publishing houses are in dispute
over the ownership of a popular song owing to the
fact that the writer made arrangements with one
concern, forgetting that he had already sold the
number to a competitor.
THAT if such a practice becomes common it will
become necessary for publishers to put song-writ-
ers through a memory lest before signing a con-
tract.
liiAT if the demands on the Remick profes-
sional department continue to increase, a system
of ''rain checks'' will have to be devised to take
care of those who cannot bj waited on at once.
THAT the local publishers of popular music who
are not now marketing or preparing to market ten
and twenty-live cent music rolls, will please raise
their hands.
THAT a meeting of the board of governors of
the Music Publishers' and Dealers' Association of
Greater New York was held last Thursday
evening for the purpose of appointing committees
and considering other matters.
THAT a decision on the appeal of the action
brought by M. Witmark & Sons against the Stand-
ard Music Roll Co., covering the enclosure of the
printed words of the song with the music roll, is
being awaited with interest by other publishers.
THAT Chas. K. Harris' waltz of peace, "When
Angels Weep," is still holding its own as an excel-
lent seller in many sections of the country.
DEATH OF JMERRE SARPY.
Director of Performing Right Society, Ltd., of
London, Dies in That City Recently—Had
Done Much for Both French and British
Composers and Publishers.
Pierre Sarpy, the director of the Performing
Right Society, Ltd., of London, Eng., died sudden-
ly in that city recently. Mr. Sarpy became man-
ager of the famous French Society of Composers
in 1903, and was most successful in protecting and
forwarding the interests of that organization.' It
was only about a year ago that he came to Eng-
land and formed the Performing Right Society
on the same lines as the French body. Under his
able direction the British society was a success
from the start. The deceased was well known to
many members of the trade in the United Slates
through his efforts, finally successful, toward con-
cluding a treaty between the British and American
societies.
E. R. BALL'S NEWEST SONQ A HIT.
"McCarty" Proves a Real "Riot" When Sung
by the Composer at the Colonial Theater.
Ernest R. Ball, who is as successful on the
vaudeville stage as he is as a writer of popular
songs, of both the ballad and comedy type, appar-
ently selected the psychological moment for intro-
ducing his latest comedy song, "McCarty" (What
Else Could You Expect from a Man Named Mc-
Carty or Any Other Loyal Irishman), at the

Colonial Theater on Monday of this week. With
the famous St. Patrick's Day only about forty-
eight hours away, the singing of "McCarty," with
its clever lyrics and melody, produced what is well
described in theatrical parlance as a "riot." The
number was heartily applauded and many encores
were demanded before Mr. Ball could proceed
with his program, which included the singing of
other of his compositions: "A. Little Bit of
Heaven, Sure They Call It Ireland," "In the
Garden of the Gods," "That's How the Shannon
Flows," and a medley of his many past successes.
Witmark & Sons are the exclusive publishers for
Mr. Ball.
