20,000 Acres to Be Purchased in Cali-
fornia if Present Plans Materialize.
A movement has been launched to purchase a
tract of 20,000 acres of the finest virgin redwood
timber, recently opened to sale by the termination
of protracted litigation and in danger of being
sold to lumber interests.
In discussing the unique features of the commer-
cial redwood, not the famous mammoth or big tree
of California, of which there are only a few groves
.and of which it is the only congener, Mr. Greyson
says it constitutes the oldest timber growth upon
the American continent.
"I should go further, for in fact these redwood
forests belong to an entirely different geological
period from the growth upon any other portion of
the continent. Many of the large trees are upward
of 4,000 years old. It produces the greatest amount
of merchantable timber per acre of any known tree
in the world, many of the choicest tracts averaging
100,000 to 125,000 feet. Its growth is confined to
what is known as the fog belt of Del Norte, Hum-
boldt and Mendocino counties, and of this the en-
tire world supply, the ownership of fully 80 per
cent, is now concentrated in the hands of a com-
paratively few large timber operators. Immense
sawmill plants have been constructed during the
last ten years, which are working at full capacity
night and day in order to rush off the timber to
supply the ever-increasing commercial demand.
"A railroad, connecting the region with San
Francisco by rail for the first time, will be com-
pleted this year. It can be foreseen that with a
continuance of the present cutting, within the next
forty or fifty years the major portion of this im-
mense timber stand will have been wiped out, and
within seventy-five years all of it will have as fully
vanished from the Pacific Coast as the white pine
has disappeared from the Atlantic.
