"NEVER AGAIN "
Said a Weil-Known Music Dealer in Recent Chat
with Samuel Buegeleisen, the Prominent Mu-
sical Merchandise Importer and Jobber.
"We were recently favored with a call from one
of the leading music dealers in the United States,"
remarked

the other day. "This
gentleman is an old
f r i e n d of o u r s
whom we have not
seen in a long time,
and it was indeed a
pleasure to welcome
him and incidental-
ly sell him a good-
sized bill. This is
not the important part of the transaction, however,
as we are continually selling goods to our old
friends.
"I remark on this particular case merely because
of the fact that this dealer had tried to import
merchandise himself for some little time, thinking
that he could make a little saving that way, but had
found himself faced with certain disadvantages
which he had not considered. For example, he
found that it was absolutely necessary to order
in large quantities, for even though he had a fair
outlet he still had to carry stock on hand quite
some time. There is, of course, a certain amount
of depreciation attached to our line, as it is a well-
known fact, for instance, that polished goods after
having been in stock for some time do not show
up very well, and as all imported instruments need
more or less looking after, the small sum that this
dealer thought he had made by direct importation
was soon absorbed by the reductions that he was
obliged to make on the tail end of his stock when
selling it. The consequence was that he really
did not make anything by importing his own mer-
chandise, and moreover had a lot of goods on
hand which needed a great deal of repairing and
re-regulating. In order to secure any results at
all he was finally obliged to dispose of the goods
at considerable sacrifice, and his own words were,
'Never again for me.'
"In going through our stocks this gentleman
selected a very clean and up-to-date line of mer-
chandise and bought a quantity which he thought
he could use during the next two or three months.
Knowing that we carry on hand at all times a
large stock of the merchandise he had selected,
this dealer feels quite at ease regarding the re-
newal of his stocks whenever he will require ad-
ditional merchandise. The goods on his shelves
will be clean at all times and in perfect condition,
besides being tuned and regulated exactly as they
should be. This regulating is an important prob-
lem, as everyone knows that accordeons, for ex-
ample, must be regulated when they arrive in this
country, as they are peculiarly susceptible to
climatic conditions. This is also true of violin
bows, as they are apt to warp, the best of them.
We have facilities for handling all these important
details, and when in our opinion merchandise
should not be sent out to our clients, we find a
market for it among job-lot buyers who handle
only this class of goods.

many similar cases, as our Mr. Kaffenberger, who
returned last week from an extensive and partic-
ularly successful trip, reports instances of like
nature that were related to him by the dealers in
the territory he visited. These dealers had been in-
duced to place their orders direct with the houses
abroad, with the ultimate result the same in all
cases—a losing proposition.
"The dealer should realize that an importing
house such as ours, which has an outlet all over
the United States and conducts an extensive ex-

small margin of profit. In fact, the smaller dealer
with a fair outlet for merchandise in his immediate
vicinity is obliged to, in most instances, pay even
more when importing direct than he does when
purchasing the same quality of goods from an up-
to-date importing house. In my buying trips abroad
I have been in contact with a great many people
who practically do a jobbing business in Europe,
and who try to induce the American dealers to
import their goods from them, posing as manu-
facturers. A comparison of prices indicates that
in most cases their prices are higher than those of
the American importing house and their merchan-
dise is of inferior quality.
"In accordance with our fixed policies of work-
ing in complete harmony and co-operation with our
trade, we are planning to issue a new booklet in
the very near future that will present certain new
merchandise.never marketed in this country before.

protected, entering into the frames of the ac-
cordeon, and when the instrument is not in use
the bellows are invisible. For this reason we have
named this new accordeon the 'Invisible Ac-
cordeon.' We are marketing this accordeon in all
styles and models, and need hardly call the trade's

CHICAGO, III., March 7.—The name of "Ashland"
as applied to musical instrument strings for violin,
'cello, bass, harp, banjo and guitar is steadily gain-
ing in the trade and professional esteem, through
the efforts of E. C. Seaton, manager, who directs
the various policies of the company, the Ashland
Manufacturing Co., of 4100 Ashland avenue, this
city. "Chicago is the logical center for gut," added
Mr. Seaton, "and all the materials used in string
manufacture come into our hands in the best con-
dition. Expert workmen take up the manufacture
so that our claims for strength, purity of tone and
resonancy may be lived up to."
'"Ashland" drumheads is another popular mem-
ber of the Ashland line, which appeals to the
dealer, in conjunction with Ashland strings, both as
a reputation builder for the merchant and for the
profits that come from selling well-known goods
of recognized standards.
SECURED SUBSTANTIAL ORDERS.
Hermann Weiss Well Pleased with Business
After His Pacific Coast Trip.
Hermann Weiss, manager of the American
branch of Ch. Weiss, 393 Broadway, New York,
returned to New York this week after a two
months' trip from Coast to Coast, visiting all the
important trade centers in the West and Far West.
Mr. Weiss secured substantial orders for the many
lines of harmonicas manufactured by Ch. Weiss, in
addition to booking good-sized orders for both
styles of the popular Fluta. The "Metalla" line in
particular formed an important part of Mr. Weiss'
total orders, this all-metal mouth organ having
achieved marked popularity in the short while it
has been on the market.
THE ELIAS HOWEJCO. REMOVING.

BOSTON, MASS., March 10.—The Elias Howe Co.,
for twenty-five years on Court street, is removing
to the new building at 8 Bosworth street, where
it intends to occupy two floors, devoted to mu-
sical merchandise. This is in the same building
that Walter Jacobs, the publisher, has removed to.
Thomas A. Edison has little placards posted all
through his factories of which most householders
will approve. They read :

Despite Ruling—Decision Will Be Appealed.
Prominent Violin Makers Moving to New Build-
ing at 141 West Forty-second Street, After
Eighteen Years' Occupancy of Their Present
Quarters on Twenty-third Street.
A 5 per cent, discount on all imports carried by
ships of American registry, as provided for in the
new tariff law, was granted Monday by the Board
of United States General Appraisers, in an opinion
given by Judge B. S. Waite.
The Board held that the favoring of American
shipping was the plain intent of Congress in fram-
ing the statute, and that the allowance to Ameri-
can vessels did not impair the treaties with foreign
countries.
The decision, if it is upheld by the higher courts,
to which an appeal will be taken, will affect four
ships of the American line from Southampton to
New York, two ships of the Red Star line, and all
coastwise vessels, which by law are all of Ameri-
can registration.
The treaties involved, read the opinion, being
those in effect with Austria-Hungary, Great Britain,
Holland, Germany and other powers, were not self-
executing, and the question of their application was
a political one not within the jurisdiction of the
courts.
The contest over the provision of the statute
was begun last November, when Attorney General
McReynolds informed the various port authorities
that the discount which was provisionally granted
by the statute could not be allowed to American
vessels without a violation of existing treaties be-
tween the United States and other powers. He
therefore held it inoperative.
McReynolds' action was followed by a protest
from the importers, which was filed with the Board
of General Appraisers, who have been considering
the case since last December.
August Gemunder & Sons, the prominent violin
makers, who have been located at 42 East Twenty-
third street, New York, for the past eighteen years,
closed arrangements this week for the occupancy
of an entire floor in the new building at 141 West
Forty-second street, New York. The firm is
planning to move into its new quarters about the
middle of next month.
In its new home this well-known violin house
will be located in the heart of the musical and
theatrical district of the city. Forty-second street
is now recognized as the center of up-town indus-
trial activity, and August Gemunder & Sons are
following the march up-town in arranging for their
new home. The building at 141 West Forty-sec-
ond street is easily accessible to all subway, ele-
vated and car systems.
