Large New Plant in Brantford, Ont.
The value of maintaining a high standard of
quality throughout the manufacture of any article
of merchandise has never been more forcefully at-
tested to than in the letter which was recently
received by Strauch Bros., 2030 Tenth avenue, New
York, from a man who has been familiar with
Strauch actions for the last forty years. In the
course of his duties Louis Schiemann has been
taking care of a piano in Seattle, Wash., which
passed its thirtieth birthday last Christmas. The
condition in which he found the instrument and
action is best told.in his own words:
"For some years," he writes, "I have been tak-
ing care of a Boardman & Gray upright piano that
was bought thirty years ago last Christmas, which
contains an action made by you. I thought it
might interest you to know the condition of this
action, as it has been used continuously by the
owner, who is a professional singer and who has
' also trained her three children in music.
"In my forty years' experience I have never
found an action to wear like that. The hammers
are as perfectly spaced as when put in the piano.
The hammer felt is very little worn, neither are
any of the other felts. It is only justice to Messrs.
Boardman & Gray to say that the tone is still pure
and mellow and the bass strings as good as ever.
The general public ought to know what it means to
take proper care of a good piano."
H. C. Harney, for some time Eastern represent-
ative of the Fairbanks Piano Co., Springfield, O.,
died suddenly on Wednesday, March 4, after a
stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Harney was in his office
on Lexington avenue at noon time and was pre-
paring to visit his daughter, Mrs. R. L. Eldridge,
M. S. Phelps, formerly of Rochester, N. Y., has
completed arrangements for the erection of a fac-
tory in Brantford, Ont., for the purpose of manu-
facturing piano cases, in which branch of the piano
trade he was very prominent while in Rochester.
The factory in Brantwood is now being constructed
and will be ready in a week or so. The kiln-drying
system has a capacity of 10,000 feet of lumber per
day and in addition to piano cases Mr. Phelps will
also make talking machine cabinets and other wood
products.

March 1 saw the advancement of Chas. W. House
& Sons, Unionville, Conn., when they went beyond
the position of jobber and became manufacturers
of cloths for all mechanical purposes.
Readers of The Review are familiar with the fact
that House & Sons have been erecting factory No.
'1, ground for which was broken last August. This
plant is equipped with the most modern machinery,
and the company only intends to make high-grade
articles in the various lines. Shipments will be
made direct from the mill, thus insuring prompt
service, which is of vital importance to the trade.

who resides at 4170 Broadway. Two friends in
the office next door noticed later that the door
of Mr. Harney's office was ajar and upon entering
found him stretched on the floor. An ambulance
was called and he was sent to the Harlem Hos-
pital, where he died about 6 o'clock that evening.
Mr. Harney had been identified with the piano
industry for several years. At one time he was in
business for himself, and after he retired he be-
came Eastern manager for the O. S. Kelly Co. and
later joined the Fairbanks Co. in the same capacity.
He was in his sixty-third year. He is survived by
a widow and daughter. The funeral services were
held at Kensico on Saturday.
Peter Innes has purchased the bass string busi-
ness of Bales & Bellem, Covington, Ky.

The leading article in the March issue of Travel
is "Tahiti the Golden," which is written by Hugo
Parton, the same being an admirably written ac-
count of his sojourn in that country. Jt is well
illustrated with views of different parts of the
country and of the people, and the whole work
gives accurate information, served in an interesting
way. Tahiti is located in the Pacific Ocean, a'bout
half way between Australia and the Hawaiian Isl-
ands, and is under the French rule. Hugo Parton
is the advertising manager of the American Felt
Co.. New York, Boston and Chicago, with offices
in Boston.
HAROLD HAAS HOME FROM CANADA.
New Haas Combination Pedal in Great Demand
—Factory Rushed—Piano Trade Active.
Harold Haas, of Henry Haas & Son, 1909 Park
avenue, returned on Monday of this week from a
trip through Canada in the interests of the Haas
hardware, which is as well known in the Dominion
as it is in the States.
Louis Haas, head of the "House of Haas,"
stated this week that there has been a splendid
demand for the new Haas combination pedal, which
from its inception has made a great "hit." This
pedal has a brass cap cast over the end of the
tail piece instead of being riveted on the base, and
has been found much more satisfactory and strong.
The factory is now rushed and there is evidence
of stimulation of business in the piano trade.
LEONARD IN HONOLULU.
A communication from Herman Leonard dated
at Honolulu states that he is enjoying himself
greatly in that climate and says that it is a great
relief to be absolved from business cares and
responsibilities.
