"Oh! You May." Woodrow Wilson got his send-
off with "Spirit of Independence." The hit of the
evening was when Vardaman temporarily took the
chair, and he started the band off with "Oh, You
Beautiful Doll."
TUNES THAT PLEASE POLITICIANS..
Band Leader at Baltimore Satirizes National
Delegates to Delight of the Crowd.
The Morning Telegraph of Sunday published the
following rather clever story. Guess the author:
Charles Weber, leader of the band that played
at the Baltimore convention, displayed his knowl-
edge of the power of popular music and showed
a great sense of humor by playing appropriate
selections at the right time.
Thus when William Jennings Bryan stepped to
the front of the platform to read his resolution
attacking the influence in politics of great wealth,
Weber and his band started up that latest of popu-
lar songs, '"At the Gate of the Palace of Dreams."
The vast audience immediately recognized its mean-
ing, and the applause and laughter were deafening.
When the New York delegates were served with
sandwiches and Charles Murphy reached for his
the band struck up "Gee, I Like Music with My
Meals."
When the nominations were made and William
B. Bankhead, of Alabama, nominated Oscar W.
Underwood, Weber thought it a good time to play
"I've Just Come Back from Dixie Land." Champ
Clark's name brought forth "You're My Baby."
Judson Harmon was nominated to the tune of
LESLIE STUART BANKRUPT.
Composer of "Florodora" Says He Has Been in
a Money Lender's Hands.
Leslie Stuart, composer of "Florodora" and sev-
eral other musical plays and songs, appeared in
the bankruptcy court in London, Eng., last week.
He stated that he had for some years been in the
hands of a money lender, who received the bulk
of his royalties. His liabilities are $25,000. His
income has amounted to between $20,000 and
$25,000 a year.
DAMROSCH TC SHARE ROYALTIES.
Walter Damrosch, composer of the opera "Cy-
rano de Bergerac" that is to be produced at the
Metropolitan Opera House in English this comin;?
season, has stated that he will not refuse to pay
a portion of the royalties to Edmund Rostand.
Mr. Damrosch asserts his willingness to divide
with Rostand after W. J. Henderson, the librettist,
receives his share.
