A certain foreign singer is repor!ed to have said
of New York opera-goers: "The Americans are,
perhaps, quite unmusical. But they are so accus-
tomed to the very best that they are instinctively
aware of something that is not quiie first class."
They certainly were in the case of this very singer.
As Addie Funk has sagely observed: "Perhaps
the best gage for a singer's success in this country
is the manner it is spoken of afterwards."
Prof. John P>. Jones, a well known composer of
music and choral society director, died Wednesday
of last week at his residence in Chicago. He was
88 years old and was born in Wales.
