THE
CARTER DE HAVEN'S CLEVER ACT.
What His Being a Headliner at Hammerstein's
Means—Featuring Feist's Hit "Honey Man."
The most difficult vaudeville house in America
to play in is Hammerstein's Victoria! The best
.nets in the world play that house; every once in a
while they put a new act in for a "try-out," and a
"try-out" at llanmierstein's Victoria means that if
you make good you are generally booked for the
"big time circuit," usually from Maine to Cali-
fornia. To be a headline act, therefore, at this
theater means to "top" acts who are headliners
over the circuit generally.
Putting it differently, the headline acts become
headline of headline acts, and Carter De Haven is
that kind of an act. He gets a big salary, too; his
aggregate earnings in a year come very close to
being as large as the President of the United States,
and it is said Carter De Haven spends more money

in dressing his act than any other male act in the
profession. He is the Beau Brummel of vaudeville
and even off stage he could be entitled to that dis-
tinction.
You can easily tell when Carter Dc Haven is to
appear, because the moment they put out his num-
ber the applause is continuous until after he ap-
pears and takes many bows, and he is entitled to his
position of headline of headliners, because he is an
artist all the way through; if there is anything in a
song or monologue he gets it out—every word of it
means something and has a meaning.
For instance, he can take a song that everybody
else in the business may be singing and make it
different. He sang "Honey Man" at the Victoria
this week and sang it as it was never sung before,
different than ever before and the applause that he
received after his rendition would indicate that it
was a decided hit. ''Honey Man" is number one of
Feist's new season's hits !
THAT "The Girl Like Mother Was" and "The
Girl Who Married Dear Old Dad" are really two
different parties.
THAT the reader will have to guess the answei
for himself.
THAT according to the criticisms of "The Fas-
cinating Widow," which opened at the Liberty
Theater on Monday night, the female impersonator
does not appeal to Broadway.
THAT it's the show that pleases the audiences
"on the road" that gets the orders for the pub-
lisher.
THAT the piano rooms in the professional de-
partments are not necessarily "chicken coops."
THAT "Bless Your Ever Loving Little Heart"
(Harris) is being used with success by Tempest
and Sunshine, at the Winter Garden and by Elsie
Janis in "The Slim Princess."
THAT it is pretty near time for another of the
famous E." T. Paull marches.

"M0USME" PROVES A SUCCESS.
Walter Eastman, manager of the New Y<
house of Chappell & Co., received a cablegram this
week stating that "Mousme," a new musical com-
edy, with book by Harold Talbot, and music by
Lionel Monckton, proved a real success at its pre-
miere in the Shaftsbury Theater, London, on Mon-
day night. It proves a w T orthy successor to "The
Arcadians."
Once in a while a publisher
is compelled to issue a song
in professional form for
the benefit of the artists.
Clarice Vance is singing a
song of that kind, entitled
"I JUST MET THE FELLOW
WHO MARRIED THE GIRL
THAT I WAS GOING TO GET"
To be frank, we do not
think that this song will
ever be a great big seller,
but we thought we would let
you know we publish it, in
the event that you do have
calls.
