Their Way to the Front in the Music Pub-

A comparatively recent entrance into the ranks
of western music publishers is that of the great
piano and musical merchandise house of Grinnell
Bros., Detroit, Mich. Although a factor in the
sheet music business for many years, it was only
in August of last year that they went into the
publishing on a large scale. Since then, how-
ever, the progress made has been such as to
fully maintain the spirit and letter of the gen-
eral motto of the firm—"The house that does
things." With their immense prestige, high cap-
ital and credit rating, and their remarkable dis-
tributive facilities, embracing their headquarters
at Detroit and their numerous branches, together
with the Canadian headquarters at Windsor,
Ont., the facilities of the house for going into
the music publishing business on a big scale are
centainly ample.
The manager of the Grinnell Bros.' publishing
house is a man long associated with them, and
who is winning a place in the front ranks both of
composers and lyric writers. Among the leading
numbers, all the work of Mr. Shannon, are "My
Old Girl," a December issue which promises to
be a big hit; "Gee! But I've Got the Blues";
"My Spanish Rose" (serenade); "That's Goin'
Some" (the crookedest rag that ever happened);
"When the Golden Sunset Bids the Day Fare-
well," "Shadowland" (spooktime lullaby); "I've
Just Time to Say Good-bye," etc. Among the
instrumentals are "Ye Barn Dance," which is
already in great vogue; "El Triumfo," a stately
and impressive march; "Dance of the Hop-
Alongs," and "March of Progress." Grinnell
Bros, will open New York and Chicago offices at
an early date.
Harry Von Tilzer, head of the Harry Von
Tilzer Music Publishing Co., and his able lieuten-
ant, Ben Bornstein, are at the Saratoga Hotel
this week whooping things up in real twentieth
century style.
Philip A. L>affey, leader of the orchestra at the
Globe Theater, and composer of "The Woman of
the West" production material, which is pub-
lished by the National Music Co., has disposed
or his new intermezzo "St. Elmo," dedicated to
the play of that name, to Clayton F. Summy.
Buny Bunyea, of "The Girl in the Taxi" fame,

in her quest for a coon song to be used by the
Cort Theater production, has not as yet decided
on one of the following songs of this type in the
catalog of the Thompson Music Co.: "Dinah
Dear," "Just Can't Stand Prosperity," "They'll
Talk About You, Anyhow," and "That's Honey,
Love."
That Bob White, the Modern Music Publisher,
possesses in his make-up the stuff of which poets
ure made is noted in the following verselet fea-
tured by one of the dailies at Christmas time:
"Snow, snow, yet more snow;
Blow, blow, blow, then some more,
The winds around us play;
The tots, though, are not one bit weary,
Though the day is somewhat dreary,
Santa's been and made them merry
On this Christmas Day."
One of the features of the "White Rats' " ball
at the Coliseum this week musically was the
rendition of numbers from the House of Chris-
topher by Chas. Taylor, who was recalled about
seven times.
Maurice Shapiro was in Chi< ago on a flying trip
this week. Several new numbers of the well-
known house of which he is the esteemed head
made their appearance simultaneously. "Good-
bye Peter and Good-bye Paul" and "Old Doctor
Brown," by Herbert Ingraham, and "You Ain't
Got the Girl Till the Ring is on Her Finger," by
Kendix and Paley.
At the Electrical Show at the Coliseum this
week Miss Blanche Mahaffey, as soloist with
John Weber's Band, is meeting with excellent
success with the big Feist numbers, " 'Way Down
in Cotton Town" and "Sonoro," the Spanish
ballad. Virginia Rankin, at the Orpheum, is
using "The Land of To-morrow" and "Be Jolly,
Molly."
Harry McDonough, formerly with the New
York office of the Ted Snyder Music Publishing
Co., has joined the forces of the Grinnell Bros.'
Music Publishing House at Detroit, and is al-
ready producing excellent results on their big
number, "My Old Girl."

on the title page of Henry Lodge's "Temptation
Rag," rising, siren-like, from the depths of a
placid sea. As the beautiful face of the siren
lures the unsuspecting mariner to his doom, so
does the irresistible melody and swing of this

On the evening of Friday, January 21st, Presi-
dent and Mrs. Taft, accompanied by guests, Mrs.
Taft's sister, Mrs. Anderson, of Cincinnati, and
her two daughters; Captain Butt, U. S. A., and
Lieutenant Easly, U. S. N., the President's aides,
occupied a box at the New National Theatre, in
Washington, to witness the performance of
'Three Twins."
The popularity of "Three Twins," so far from
diminishing, is continually on the increase, and

mental numbers of the hour.
In proof of their faith in "Temptation Rag"
the Witmarks have just published a vocal ver-
sion of this number under the title of "Tempta-
tion," with appropriate words written by Louis
Weslyn. The verses are descriptive of a darky
ball on a Saturday night, at which the singer
and his sweetheart have made a hit dancing the
"Temptation Rag," which is a smart two-step and
buck dance.
