A business which always has been conducted on
a high commercial plane is that founded by Geo.
P. Bent. Pew in the trade, either in this coun-
try or abroad, who are not acquainted with this
gentleman's forceful personality. He has ever
labored upward and onward for the best interests
of the trade, and has kept the standing of the
"Crown" pianos, which he manufactures, on a
high pedestal.
The recent incorporation of the Geo. P. Bent
Co. has, in a measure, brought to light the
splendid organization back of Mr. Bent, and
which has aided him so admirably in the upbuild-

ing of the institution of which he is now presi-
dent.
It is conceded by those who have made a study
of music trade conditions that there are few
businesses better organized in both manufactur-
ing and selling departments than that now known
as the Geo. P. Bent Co., and naturally informa-
tion regarding the men at the helm of the vari-
ous departments must prove interesting.
It is worthy of note that the men who com-
prise the "Crown" organization have been asso-
ciated with Geo. P. Bent almost during their en-
tire business lives. Chas. A. Bent, first vice-
president and treasurer of the Geo. P. Bent Co.,
has been promoting the interests of the "Crown"
pianos for nearly thirty years. Wm. H. Matchett,
second vice-president, who is also the head of the
factory, has been with Mr. Bent for a like period,
and his skill and ability are best demonstrated
in the splendid qualities of the "Crown" pianos
turned out by this house. Ernest G. Meikle, sec-
retary of the company, and son-in-law of Geo. P.
Bent, has been with the house for almost twenty
years, while Geo. P. Bent, who is the manager of
the retail department, and son of the head of the
house, has been with the business for about ten
years. Truly a record, in many respects un-
precedented, covering as it does almost a century
of combined service on the part of Mr. Bent's
four associates.
It was in 1879 that Geo. P. Bent established his
business in Chicago, and, as might be expected
from a man of his disposition, he started out with
a strong individual policy. Possessed of a keen,
bright, active business mind he gauged conditions
correctly, and his great knowledge of men and
things enabled him to gather around him a quar-
tet of brainy men and to build up a chain of
agencies from coast to coast, which has resulted
in the success of the "Crown" business as we
know it to-day. His character for upright-
ness, integrity and good judgment seemed to
radiate throughout the entire business, and all
associated with it have commended the respect
of the trade at all times.
From the very start Mr. Bent made it a point
to embody in the "Crown" pianos an assured
value, both structurally, musically and architect-
urally, and from time to time has enhanced their
prestige by bringing out styles containing new

scales which mark a decided advance in tone vol-
ume and quality. In fact, there is not a season
that the "Crown" styles have not been improved,
because to the gentlemen composing the Geo. P.
Bent Co. there is no such thing as standing still.
The latest product of this company is the
Crown Combinola—the "Crown" piano with
player mechanism. It is of the same high stand-
ard as the "Crown" pianos, made to give the ut-
most satisfaction and with the object in view of
satisfying the most artistic desires of the users.
What difficulties American exporters of pianos
have to contend with is aptly described in the
last issue of the "American Exporter" as follows:
"The export of American pianos to foreign
countries presents many difficulties unknown to
other branches of the export commerce. There
is not only the strenuous competition of manu-
facturers from all parts of the world to be met,
climatic conditions to be overcome, but all the
characteristics of the different nations to be con-
sidered, as each of them has its own conception,
its own taste regarding the piano, so far as con-
struction and exterior appearance go.
"But there are two features in the considera-
tion of the instrument which are thoroughly cos-
mopolitan. First, tone quality is not only de-
sired, but appreciated and understood by every
civilized nation. Second, durability and relia-
bility must be shown to the purchaser in China
as well as to the native of Missouri, and the
buyer in South Africa appreciates the value of
his dollar as well as the buyer in the United
States.
"To be successful in the export market a manu-
facturer must prove his ability and his resources
in every possible way, and the American manu-
facturer more so than any other."

Hayden Bios., Omaha, Neb., have taken the
agency for the H. P. Nelson pianos in that city
and vicinity.
THE STEINWAY IN PASSAIC, N. J.
Paradiso & Gazella, the progressive piano
dealers of Passaic, N. J., have secured the agency
for the Steinway piano in that territory, and are
in a position to give it excellent representation.

Walter Engelhardt, of F. Engelhardt & Sons,
manufacturers of the Peerless piano player,
piano actions, etc., 2 East 47th street, who spent
the fore part of the week at the salesrooms,
stated to a Review representative that trade was
quite satisfactory and that the factory at St.
Johnsville, N. Y., was running with almost the
full quota of help in all departments.
Emory C. Julius has been appointed manager
of the piano store of his uncle, J. P. Julius, in
York, Pa.

CONVENTION TOPICS.
Many Members Have Made Suggestions for
Discussions at the Coming Convention,
Others Are Invited—No Exhibit Will be Al-
lo'wed at the Hotel Astor.

Topics for discussion at the next annual con-
vention of the National Association of Piano
Dealers of America are pouring in from various
quarters. Blmon Arm-
strong, of Kansas City,
Mo., wrote a letter to
President Crew urging
that the New York con-
vention shall show some
strenuous results. Mr.
Armstrong calls atten-
tion to the competition
in mail order houses,
which must be met by country dealers, and ex-
presses hope that the association can organize
itself and take action in such a way as will
result in eliminating this undesirable competi-
tion. He also hopes that the stencil question
with all its evils may be settled permanently,
and that a systematic and business-like method
of selling goods should be universally adopted.
In closing his letter, Mr. Armstrong says: "Can't
we pass some resolutions with penalties attached
to them? Sentiment is a good thing, but if our
resolutions are only to be passed for the senti-
mental effect we will never accomplish anything
of any consequence in a business way."

Other members of the association urge that
some definite action be taken relative to the
disposition of the old square piano and other
antiquated instruments which are so liberally
taken in trade by dealers. This is one of the
influences which forbids absolute adoption of a
one-price system. These old relics of by-gone
days are practically worthless. The furniture
dealer would laugh at the suggestion that he take
an old bedroom suite in part payment for a new
one, and the clothing dealers have not started
the custom of taking old winter clothes in part
payment for a new spring suit. Many fond hus-
bands would hail the day when the milliner
would take wife's old hats and credit them on
the bill for a new one, but there is no evidence
of any "hailing" as yet.
Some owners of these old instruments labor
under the false impression that the various par.ts

are of value, and can be used in making new
instruments. It is also thought by some that
these old instruments can be made over, and be
as valuable as when new. Both these impres-
sions are wrong, as no particular part of an old
instrument is of any special value in building
a new one, and in the majority of cases the old
organs and square pianos are not of sufficient
value -to justify the expense of rebuilding them.
These are elements in connection with the old
square which the public does not generally
understand, and. it will require vigorous action
to impress upon the minds of the prospective
purchasers the true state of affairs. Whether or
not the association can at this meeting develop
a plan which can be universally placed in suc-
cessful operation should be determined, so claim
a number of members.

Among other topics suggested are the adoption
of prompt and business-like methods for the col-
lection departments to prove that the music
trade is real business and not haphazard play.
Banks, for instance,' collect small notes just as
methodically as they collect large ones.
The necessity for keeping stock in tune and
prime condition may appear to be a trivial sub-
ject, but many country warerooms show that no
sort of attention is paid to the condition of
stock.
Another interesting topic suggested is the
benefits of regular musicales by piano houses,
which, wherever tried, appear to arouse interest
and stimulate sales.
The time-worn subject of insisting on larger
instalments from first to last of the contract has
also been suggested.
In the matter of advertising, less sensational
methods in the point of advertising bargains
should be earnestly recommended for decency's
sake. In most of our large cities it is possible
to find three or four houses who seem to be for-
getful that the piano trade is entitled to any
semblance of decency. By their methods of ad-
vertising they lowered the standard of the trade
to the level of a second-hand junk shop.
Members should continue to send in sugges-
tions of topics for discussion. President Crew
will do his utmost to see that they are taken up
and given the amount of time necessary for dis-
cussion and disposition. It will be Mr. Crew's
intention to have very few prepared papers, but
the various subjects will be taken up impromptu
on the floor of the convention.

The Press Committee has this week sent out
to all members of the association a publicity
sheet submitting a number of stories on associa-
tion topics, with the request that the members
have these stories printed from time to time In
their local newspapers. This is the first time
any concerted plan of this nature has been
adopted by the Press Committee, and it ought to
result as a widespread educational feature.

The disposition of the stencil piano question, in
accordance with the resolution which was passed
at the last meeting of the officers will very natu-
rally come up for a considerable amount of argu-
ment and attention, and it is earnestly hoped
that this problem which has been facing the
dealers and manufacturers for the past several
years may be disposed of in such manner as
will work out satisfactorily to all concerned.

Many manufacturers of instruments have made
the usual inquiry as to the possibility of making
a display of pianos at the Hotel Astor during
the convention. The rules of the Hotel Astor
will not permit any pianos to be delivered at
the hotel for exhibition purposes, and it will
therefore be useless for the manufacturers to
make any overtures to the hitel management.
