THE MU^IC "TRADE REVIEW
A. F. Adams, of the John Church Co., New
York, goes to Nova Scotia in a week for his va-
cation. Speaking of his trip, he said: "I want to
get into the woods as quickly as possible and
forget all about, business for a fortnight at least,
and I therefore propose to have a thorough rest.
Sousa's summer song, "I've Made My Plans for
the Summer," is developing satisfactorily. It
takes a little more time for a Sousa piece to
catch, but when it gets agoing it sticks.
In Vienna, "The Meny Widow" had a run of
450 consecutive performances. Of the "Siren
Waltz," which brings the second act to an ef-
fective climax, more than 800,000 copies have
already been sold. The operetta is apparently
able to stand transplanting well, for both in St.
Petersburg and Copenhagen it has been sung
over three hundred times. In London the "Merry
Widow" was received with remarkable enthusi-
asm. It is rumored that the composer, Mr. Le-
har, has been asked to write a score for George
Edwardes, for whom Chappell & Co. are the pub-
lishers.
Harry von Tilzer, of the Harry von Tilzer Mu-
sic Publishing Co., arrived from Europe Wednes-
day of last week on the "Kaiser Wilhelm II."
Much is heard of the better and more healthy
tone that will, some time in the future, dominate
the music business, a millennium to be brought
about in large part by the American Music Stores
and the United Music Stores Co., of whose exist-
ence the trade is doubtless aware. Among other
claims, officially heralded at the beginning, was
that the recognized jobbing price would be ac-
cepted in buying without a murmur, as an ex-
ample . to the benighted, who cajole, beat down
and well-nigh perjure themselves to obtain an
"inside" figure. This is what occurred on the
telephone: Manager: "Ben, I want twenty-five
copies of 'The Monkey Up a Tree'" (this title will
do as well as any other for an illustration).
Ben: "All right," and quotes the price of 1 2 ^
cents, which apparently displeases the manager,
who replies in a seemingly surprised tone of
voice, "What? That's altogether out of the ques-
tion! We should get it for 10 cents. You know
this is going to be a big thing, and we want
rock-bottom on everything." Ben, however, was
obdurate, and it was 12 '{• cents or nothing, and

Mr. Manager, after a long palaver and a bunch
of persuasive talk, finally hung up the receiver

position of the jobber was about to be usurped.

WHERE THE WITMARKS WIN.
M. Witmark & Sons take a keen pleasure in
the success of Sophie Brandt, who is having such
splendid success in Chicago. The press are
unanimous in praise of this gifted artist, who
won their city by the attractiveness of her per-
sonality and the excellent songs she chooses. Her
latest list comprises: "You're All the World to
Me," "Moon Dear," "Carissima'' and "Take Me
with You in Your Dreams."
The Young America Quintet is having one of
the best seasons in its history. It is making a
star number of "Hello! Miss Lizzie Green," which
never fails to strike the funny side of an audi-
ence.
The Clifton Sisters, of whom there are four, are
still on veudeville route and making a specialty
of "Love Me and the World Is Mine." This song
is rarely heard to better advantage than as they
give it.
