Baltimore, Md., March 25, 1907.
While business in this city during the Lenten
season has been unusually brisk the real spurt
does not begin until after the Easter holidays,
and the dealers feel confident that the spring
sales this year will far exceed those of previous
seasons. The increased demand for high grade
pianos and the slump in the demand for inferior
grades are matters over which the local men are
jubilant. This has been a noticeable feature of
the sales at several of the establishments during
the last week.
William Knabe & Co. issue the same encourag-
ing edict that business continues good. Charles
Keidel, Jr., the local representative of the firm,
sold among other things a magnificent Knabe
upright piano to Governor Edwin Warfield. This
instrument was built especially for Maryland's
chief executive. It has a beautiful mahogany
case and will be used in the executive mansion
at Annapolis.
Mr. Keidel returned yesterday from Norfolk,
where he spent two days on business for the
firm. He reports that the piano business is
booming in that locality.
The demand for high grade pianos has been
especially large during the week at the Stieff
warerooms, many of which have been disposed
of. This house has had little or no call for
cheap instruments. A large shipment of Stieff
pianos has been sent to colleges in Michigan,
Illinois and Pennsylvania. Business at the fac-
tory continues up to the standard and a full force
of workmen is kept continually at work.
A Stieff concert grand was sold to a Philadel-
phian in consequence of the excellent recital
given in that city last week at the Music Fund
Hall, when the Stieff piano was used.
The Jamestown Exposition plans keep J. H.
Williams, the local manager, and a large force
of hands on the go. The arrangements now are
in pretty good shape. Mr. Williams will leave
to-morrow for Norfolk to hurry matters along
there. His particular efforts now are in the di-
rection of obtaining different artists each week
during the busy season of the Exposition.
The past week has been a busy one for the
Lumpkin Piano Co., especially in the piano line.
This line of trade, in so far as this particular
firm are concerned, has increased at a rapid rate
recently. The organ trade, however, has de-
clined so as to make it difficult for the firm to
get rid of the few that they still have in stock.
A«* soon as these organs are sold the house will
give up its several agencies for OTgans and en-
gage exclusively in the piano business.
Robert Lertz & Co. have had a good week, but
expect a better run in business after the Easter
holidays.
G. Wright Nicols, manager for the Sanders &
Stayman Piano Co., returned last week from At-
lantic City, where he spent two weeks partly on
business for the firm and also for a little recrea-
tion.
Much interest has been manifested by the firm
over the announcement that Moriz Rosenthal,
who uses the Weber piano, for which the house
has the agency, will appear in this city again on
the night of April 17, at the Lyric. He is travel-
ing under the management of Henry Wolfsohn.
Already a heavy demand for tickets for the re-
cital has been received and a record breaking
attendance is expected. Rosenthal made a most
favorable impression on the occasion of his last
visit in Baltimore.
The Kranz-Smith Co. have been in line with
the others engaged in the trade and report a good
sale of pianos. They have recently taken the
agency for the Mansfield piano.
Mrs. H. Brandt has dpened a music store in
Bisbee, Ariz.
The Vough Piano Co. report that never before
has there been such a demand for the Vough
changeable pitch piano as since the first of the
year. Not only for theaters, churches, halls,
lodge rooms and vaudeville houses has the Vough
become popular, but for the home the piano is
winning an enviable reputation, both because of
the advantages of changeable pitch and for the
tone and durability of the instrument.
The company are over two months behind or-
ders for the Vough changeable pitch piano, and
not since September last have the company been
less than one month behind. Efforts are being
made to catch up again, and it is hoped that
within a short time all orders will receive prompt
attention.
During the last week the following sales of the
changeable pitch piano to public institutions have
been reported: Hillsdale College Y. M. C. A.,
Hillsdale, Mich.; Christian Church, Latham, 111.;
United Brethren Church, Fort Wayne, Ind.;
David Church, Dayton, O.; Buckeye Lodge,
I. O. O. F., Dayton, O.; City Hall, Union City,
Pa.; the Library Theater, Warren, Pa.
MORRIS STEINERT'S 76th BIRTHDAY.
Morris Steinert celebrated his seventy-sixth
birthday recently, and the local press of New
Haven, Conn., took occasion to publish several
flattering notices of the occasion. Mr. Steinert
holds a prominent position in his home city, hav-
ing founded the New Haven Symphony Orchestra,
endowed Yale University with several scholar-
ships and also presented it with a valuable col-
lection of keyed and stringed instruments.
TO INSPECT ORGAN PLANT.
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) is expected to
be one of the party of thirty prominent organists
who will go to Elmira, N. Y., April 3, to inspect
the new organ in the Park Church, built by the
Hope Jones Organ Co., of that city. Mr. Clem-
ens is a large stockholder in the organ company.
A special Pullman will be provided to bring the
organists, and they will be received by Mayor
Brockway, of Elmira.
GRINNELL BROS. IN WINDSOR, ONT.
Grinnell Bros., the prominent piano dealers of
Detroit, Mich., have completed arrangements for
opening a branch store in Windsor, Ont, just
across the river from Detroit, making the six-
teenth store operated by that company outside
of Detroit, where they have two stores and a fac-
tory. The business was started by Ira L. Grin-
nell in a small way over forty years ago. The
Windsor branch will be fully stocked with several
lines of pianos and musical merchandise of all
descriptions.
DEATH OF MRS. MARY B. DAVISON BAKER.
The death is announced of Mary Brockett Davi-
son Baker, mother of T. G. Davison Baker, of
Sohmer & Co., New York, which occurred in
Toronto, Canada, on March 24, 1907. Mrs. Baker
possessed many charming traits of character
which endeared her to a host of friends and was
highly respected in the community. Born April
24, 1836, she lived to a ripe old age, yet was ever
alert and keenly interested in the world's prog-
ress. Mr. Baker left for Canada on receipt of a
wire apprising him of his mother's death.
S. M. Sutherland & Son, Toledo, O., have taken
over the plant of the Hollerbach Piano Co. and
will make the Hollerbach piano, as L. Holler-
bach, formerly of the company of that name, is
now with the Sutherland people. The Holler-
bach Co. have opened retail warerooms, and it is
said will bring suit against the Sutherland con-
cern for making a piano under their name.

LHEVINNE TO NORDHEIMER.
Wants the Same Steinway Piano for His Next
Recital in Montreal.
Joseph Lhevinne, the eminent pianist, who re-
cently scored such a great success in Canada, has
written the Nordheimer Music Co., Ltd., of Mon-
treal, the following letter, which contains a flat-
tering indorsement of the Steinway tz Sons piano
which he used:
"Gentlemen—In the hurry of my travels, I
omitted to thank you for the beautiful Steinway
grand piano which you sent me for my recital in
Quebec in January, but as my Montreal engage-
ment is approaching, I would like to know
whether you can furnish that same piano for my
Montreal recital on April 2. You know we pian-
ists are somewhat particular, and as the tone and
action was all I could wish for in the piano I had
in Quebec, I want to make sure that I can have
it for my Montreal recital."
FOSTER'S HOBART M. CABLE BOOKLET.
C. H. Foster & Co., representatives of the Ho-
bart M. Cable piano in Lincoln, 111., have just
published a very handsome booklet, containing a
long list of purchasers of these pianos in that lo-
cality, which are interspersed with portraits of
some of the prominent users of Hobart M. Cable
pianos. The booklet is handsomely gotten up,
and in the preface a strong tribute is paid the
piano, its makers and the founder of the com-
pany, Hobart M. Cable.
FIGHTING THE STENCIL PIANOS.
J. W. Shaw & Co., piano dealers of 370 West
St. Catherine street, Montreal, Can., have been
carrying on a strong campaign against the stencil
pianos in the advertising columns of the local
papers, and say that the legitimate manufactur-
ers have been helped through acquainting the
public with what a "stencil" really is. Shaw &
Co. make the point that the stencil pianos are

made by manufacturers without the backing of
their name on the fall board, and therefore are
unreliable.

Under

E. Gabler & Bro., the distinguished piano
manufacturers of Whitlock and Leggett avenues,
New York, are steadily enlarging their line of
representatives in all parts of the country. Week
after week these names have been chronicled in
The Review. Among the most recent who en-
listed under the Gabler banner are H. H. Fiedler,
Cuba City, Wis.; the Flanner-Hafsoos Piano Co.,
Milwaukee, Wis., and Edward Daehler, Dixon, 111.
ZOL FOR SPRING HOUSECLEANING.
Not the least of the housewife's problems at
housecleaning time is the brightening up of fur-
niture. Little folks' fingermarks on the piano
can scarcely be prevented, and just what to do
about it is a problem no matter what the men
folks say. The "piano finish" seems to have
been too fine to be restored with ordinary furni-
ture polish, and madam is in a quandary. It
was this condition that led to the marketing of
Zol used for thirty years by Lyon & Healy, the
largest music house in the world. It is one of
their valuable trade secrets and is offered in
response to thousands of inquiries as to what
polish should be used on a piano. It cleans and
polishes at the same time, and may be used on
pianos, furniture or hardwood floors with the
best results.
BOGUS SOLICITOR ARRESTED.
J. H. Eakin claimed to be soliciting subscrip-
tions for The Musician, a well-known musical
journal published in Boston. All went well with
him and he did a land office business in various
towns in the vicinity of Chicago, until he called
at the studio of Miss Lillian Walker. She con-
sidered something was wrong owing to the spe-
cial price which Eakin was willing to accept for
a year's subscription, and immediately tele-
graphed the Oliver Ditson Co., publishers of The
Musician. Manager Woodman took the first
train to Chicago and, in connection with a Lyon
& Healy agent, the local representative, ran down
Eakin and had him bound over to the Grand
Jury in bonds of $500.
SCHAEFFER PUBLICITY.
A Strong Proof of the Excellence of the Schaef-
fer Piano Is to be Found in Its Growing
Popularity Throughout the Country.
The advertisement of the Schaeffer Piano Co.,
which appears elsewhere in this issue, is a most
unique and effective example of up-to-date pub-
licity. The idea first presented by the Jenkins
house in regard to the character of the Schaeffer
line of pianos, as "best in the West," is strikingly
set forth, while the splendid business which the
Schaeffer Co. are doing with some of the largest
dealers in the country, affords proof that the
estimate based upon these instruments by the
Jenkins house is substantiated in a most em-
phatic way—namely, by the placing of large or-
ders. The latest styles of Schaeffer pianos have
won universal approval, not alone for their archi-
tectural design, but for their construction and
tonal excellence.
THE BALDWIN IS THEIR LEADER.
The Paul M. Moll Music Co., Detroit, Mich.,
emphatically deny the report that they were
going to lose the Baldwin line in that territory.
On the contrary, a very fine business has been
done in Baldwin instruments ever since the Moll
Music Co. have had the line, and the Baldwin
people are fully satisfied with the results.

In Order To Win A Permanent Place
in the public mind, any manufactured article must have merit. Persistent advertising might for a
time win a temporary position, but the real merit must be there in order to stand the wear and tear
of time. Conditions do not differ materially in the manufacture of piano-plates from other lines,
and if the Kelly plates did not possess special merit, they would not continue to hold the su-
preme position which it is generally recognized that they occupy. There is nothing overlooked
—even to the remotest detail—which can add to plate value which is not incorporated within every
Kelly plate. The finish, the strength, the durability, all are talking points, and every dealer may
have the satisfaction of knowing that when he sees the Kelly trade-mark on a plate that par-
ticular structural part of the piano is beyond the troubling standpoint.
