REVIEW OF TRADE CONDITION.
Small Goods Houses Well Pleased With General
Outlook—Prices Continue to Hold Stiff—
Some Interesting Developments Soon Op-
timism Very Prevalent.
Following the opening oi the year the small
goods stock houses report a stage of business
entirely to their satisfaction. In other words,
trade has developed in a preliminary way far
beyond what was expected at this season. There
is a tendency to speak of trade in a manner far
from enthusiastic, but the facts will not. bear
out this condition, for the reason that the buying
is very satisfactory. Prices have not suffered
in any manner, and it appears, so far as the regu-
lar season goes, there will be no diminution in
price. The feeling is very strong, and the possi-
bilities of a satisfactory spring trade are already
in evidence.
During the coming season there will be some
changes that may cut more or less of a figure in
the trade, and the developments will be watched
with a great deal of interest. The parlies in-
volved are so well known that it would be su-
perfluous to mention names, and the outcome
will doubtless be far reaching.
Referring to general conditions, a prominent
wholesaler said to The Review on Monday:
"The outlook is the best ever in the trade. The
call for goods is not as strong, but it is insistent,
and this is remarkable for this time of the year.
There does not seem to be the slightest idea of
a cut in prices along the entire line, for condi-
tions are against ii. So far as the future may
be concerned, the outlook could not be brighter.
In fact, according to the information 1 have, we
are up against the best year in our history. The
situation is more than promising, and if 1905 is
not a record period my calculations are far
astray."
