after a careful study of the rules of instruc-
tion given. The many hours of weary rou-
tine work consumed in practice upon the
ordinary musical instrument, are saved for
more profitable employment or recreation.
"The effects attained by a comparative
beginner on the mandolinette, are equal, if
not superior, to results produced by the
mandolin expert who has spent years in prac-
tice, and this without the loss of expression
and individuality, so essential to perfect
music. As an accompaniment to the piano,
violin, or guitar, it is superb, harmonious
and inspiring. Prices range from $1.00 to
$3-50."
A MARTIN STOOL LEADER.
Style 264, as shown on this page, is one of
E. N. Martin's leaders in his choice variety
of piano stools, which includes a score of
attractive, tasteful designs. The latest Mar-
tin booklet contains illustrations of each
style with description.

Mr. Martin expresses his willingness to
send this booklet to such as desire a copy.
It will be of great service in making a selec-
tion. By the adoption and following up of
a vigorous, aggressive policy, Mr. Martin
has built up a big business at 13 East Four-
teenth street, and his prospects are excellent.
MUSIC IN CHINA AND JAPAN.
• Nations which have the gift of artistic
coloring and harmony of design are almost
invariably lacking in harmony of musical
sound. Chinese and Japanese music is mo-
notonous in the extreme, and their singing
has been aptly compared "to a series of mo-
notonous, high toned falsetto notes, resem-
bling the sad howling of the wind in a storm
or the wail of a banshee.''
This arises not from physical incapacity,
but from want of knowledge of music r_; an
art. There are no sweet singers among the
Japanese and Chinese. The lark, the black-
bird, nightingale, thrush and mocking bird
are unknown, so the melancholy cries of the
gull, the hawk and the kite seem to serve as
models for the wails and shrieks of their un-
cultured human voices.
