THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
This log- is an exception, as it appears to be
equally fine in every part.
Mahogany is very popular in the United
States since the annexation of the West In-
dian Islands, and the market there is now
much better for fine figured wood generally
than in this country. This mahogany tree
will become a much traveled one, for it
grew in Cuba, was shipped to Liverpool and
then conveyed to London. It will now be
carried back to the Western hemisphere for
conversion, and will thus have been conveyed
between 8,000 and 9,000 miles over land and
water since it was felled. It is also quite
within the range of probability that some of
the veneers manufactured from it will event-
ually find their way back to Europe.
The price paid for this log is not a record
one; a guinea a foot has been paid before
now for Spanish wood, and there are legends
in the trade of even higher prices being
realized in the hazy past, but it was a bold
venture on the part of the London buyer,
and a nervy speculation on behalf of the
American firm, and we hope that the log
will open out to the satisfaction of its enter-
prising possessors.

A CARLETON CATALOGUE.
The Schaeffer Piano Manufacturing Co.,
of Chicago, have just sent out a neatly print-
ed catalogue devoted to the Carleton pianos,
which they manufacture. The instruments
illustrated, style L and style G, are very at-
tractive in design, and an idea of the stabil-
ity and thoroughness of their construction
will be gleaned from the designs of interior
and back, as well as from the accompanying
descriptive matter. The Carleton is rapidly
increasing its wide constituency of admirers.
