thousand "records" in stock all the time. As
the Evening Post says: When the business
first began to assume its present large pro-
portions, several attempts were made to es-
tablish phonographic "libraries." The cus-
tomer, whose responsibility had to be vouched
for, as in a circulating library, was first re-
quired to pay for a dozen records. After-
wards, for a small monthly payment, he was
to have the privilege of taking out so many
records a month and keeping each one two
weeks to use on his machine. The plan
sounded practicable, and a good profit could
be figured out on paper. One factor, how-
ever, was disregarded, and that was the nat-
ural human tendency not to take good care
of anything that is rented. There is no ar-
ticle of commerce more delicate than the fine
wax cylinders, and careless handling would
result in spoiling a good proportion of the
"library's" stock every month. So this plan
was unsatisfactory. Instead, the "exchange"
system is now widely in vogue. Customers
understand that the least flaw or scratch cuts
off the privilege of exchange, and they treat
the records accordingly.

The police of Greater New York are still
looking for the Stradivarius violin, the theft
of which was announced in a general alarm
last week. It is believed that the instrument
has fallen into the hands of some person
who does not appreciate its value, and that
it may be found in a cheap pawnshop. Cap-
tain Titus said:
"The Stradivarius was owned Ly a musi-
cian who used it to earn his living. It was
taken from his home. I am not at liberty
to give the name of the owner until we
discover the thief."
