TABER ORGAN CO.,
Geo. D. Rose on Piano Making.
The head of the Broadwood factory makes some
pertinent remarks on construction and dec-
oration.
John Broadwood & Sons, the celebrated
English manufacturers, recently held an ex-
hibition at their showrooms in London of
a number of specially decorated pianos, in-
cluding the magnificent concert grand, de-
signed for the Paris Exposition by Arthur
C. Blomfield. The architecture of this instru-
ment is after the Georgian style, and the ma-
terial was Spanish mahogany inlaid with col-
ored woods and relieved with inscriptions
from the poet Cowper's works. The exhibition
was closed on March 2d, but so great was
the interest in this display of pianos, unique
alike in construction and decoration, that the
instruments were allowed to remain on ex-
hibition long after a majority of them had
been sold. Our London contemporary, Mu-
sic, says that a vivid and amusing contrast
to the well-known lights in the musical world
and the well-dressed ladies and gentleman
who came to the historic house to see the
collection of decorated pianofortes, were the
employes of the Broadwood factory, who
were invited to inspect the show one evening
in company with their uncles and their cou-
sins and their aunts. They turned up to the
number of 2,000. The natural pride which
every craftsman feels in his work was on this
occasion plainly revealed, and many a glue-
pot boy and "chipper-up" went home not
only proud of his share in a beautiful art
work—for the factory hand rarely ever sees
the finished article—but conscious of the in-
creased esteem and affection of his "best
girl."

On March 9th the Broadwood showrooms
