the left hand relatively to the finger-board,
means are provided for retaining the left-
hand thumb in a given position, while the
open spaces in the mask or frame oblige
the learner to exert finger-pressure only at
those points where the shape of the said
spaces leaves an opening for each string
of the instrument, respectively, according
to the key, thus insuring a result that has
not, it is claimed, been hitherto attained
by any known auxiliary means.

The object of this invention is to provide
certain new and useful improvements in
stringed musical instruments, such as
citherns or the like, whereby the pitch of
all the strings in a group of strings or only
a few thereof can be readily raised or low-
ered, according to the music to be exe-
cuted.
National Gramophone.
The report of the National Gramophone
Co. for the ten months ending Dec. 31,
1899, shows a total income (including in-
crease of merchandise) of $456,229.88.
The expenses (including dividends of $71,-
450) were $375,750.03, leaving a surplus of
$80,479.85. It has been decided to declare
quarterly dividends instead of monthly, as
heretofore. The old officers have been re-
elected.
The Oldest Piano.
Mrs. Dr. Young, of Warren county,
somebody who has interviewed an "oldest
inhabitant" on the subject says, owned the
first piano in Northern Missouri. It was
brought there in 1816. Many women
walked from Callaway, Montgomery, Lin-
coln and St. Charles to see the wonderful
instrument. They carried their babies and
shoes in their arms and felt amply repaid
for their journey when Mrs. Young had
gone no farther than a few bars of ' 'The
Campbells Are Coming," in her perform-
ance 0.1 it.—Kansas City, Mo., Journal.
A New Harmonica.
A new style of harmonica which has
just been patented in Germany is that in-
vented and manufactured by Werner Het-
scheld of Berlin. It is constructed some-
what on the lines of an accordeon, as each
note can be sounded both when the instru-
ment is expanded or contracted. In this
instrument its power and the capacity of
the player are enormously increased.
C. C. Harvey, of Boston, has not only
purchased the Mason & Hamlin rented
stock, consisting of nearly one hundred
pianos, but he has also purchased the
Jacob Doll leases, held by Jacob Doll's re-
presentative in Boston. The amount of
money which changed hands in these trans-
actions was large.
