down to the footlights and formed a long
and deep "cranks' alley."
Paderewski appeared, bowed and disap-
peared. But that did not disconcert the
girls. They had had the same experience
with him three years ago. So they kept
right on until, amid a whirlwind of ap-
plause and bravas, he walked over to the
piano and played a Chopin waltz. Then
the same scenes were re-enacted until he
again went to the piano and gave Rubin-
stein's arrangement of Beethoven's march
from " T h e Ruins of Athens." If he
thought that because it was a march it
would act as a "chaser" he was mistaken,
for he was obliged to play again, this time
a minuet—not the famous one—of his own.
All this enthusiasm was deserved. The
very first piece on the program, the Bach-
Liszt composition, showed one thing very
clearly—Paderewski

The peerless Paderewski and the famous
Steinway grand, achieved a great triumph
at the first appearance this season of the
great virtuoso at Carnegie Hall on Tues-
day afternoon. As he walked across the
stage, not quite as slender and hair not
quite so long as three years ago, and sat at
the piano to play the Bach-Liszt Fantasie
and Fugue, he was greeted with a tumultu-
ous applause from a packed house.
Down the entire program there was not
a piece which the enthusiasm of the audi-
ence would not have justified him in re-
peating. But he acknowledged it merely
with bows, though after several pieces he
was obliged to break in upon the applause
with the next number.
When, however, he had finished the re-
cital proper the audience had its inning.

2. It was given in an exquisitely tender,
dreamy manner.
In everything that the great pianist
played, even in the enormously difficult
Strauss-Tausig waltz, "Man Lebt nur
Einmal," and Liszt's sixth " Rhapsodie
Hongroise," his playing was delightfully
free from all appearance,of physical exer-
tion. Save for a few vicious stabs at the
pedal, when he wanted to produce a pecu-
liar choppy effect in a Chopin " Mazurka,"
his performance was unmarred by an) 7
personal idiosyncrasies.

" SUPERB " CREATION.
AS A
A letter recently written by the great
organist contains the following spontane-
ous tribute to the playing of Clara Murray
on the Lyon & Healy Harp:
"At Cincinnati, Ohio, last evening I had
the pleasure of listening to some remark-
ably fine harp playing by Mrs. Clara Mur-
ray. Her superb Lyon & Healy harp was
in excellent tune, and she produced many
charming effects with truly admirable skill.
The large audience, filling the great music
hall, was enthusiastic and recalled Mrs.
Murray several times after each selection.
