has been offered so far, however, has
tempted him to sell. The Stradivarius

is calculated that Stradivarius made about

he obtained the instrument. Such artists
as Remenyi, the renowned violinist; Fritz
Giese, Leo Schulz and other members of
the Boston Symphony Orchestra have pro-
nounced the 'cello without a peer. The
history of the instrument is interesting.
Some years ago the late C. H. Hilde-
brandt, father of the present owner, bought
the 'cello from an Italian nobleman, who
was traveling in this country at the time.
The foreigner said that he had an Amati
'cello, which was smaller and suited his
hands better. A few months later he called
again and wished to buy the instrument

Breckwoldt & Co.
Writing of our genial friend, Julius Breck-
woldt, in the last issue of the Dolgeville
Republican, the "Prattler" says: It was
a pleasant surprise when I learned that my
old friend Herman Giese, was now con-
nected with the industry and that he was
one of the firm of Breckwoldt & Co. Less
than six months ago the business occupied
only the lower floor of the foundry build-
ing. Now the floor space is more than
quadrupled bringing into use the entire

building aforesaid, the entire mill former-
ly occupied by the Gieses, an immense dry
house just erected and the Giese dwelling
which is used for an office. The sounding-
board business was never as good as this
^ear. The firm have added several other
articles connected with piano construction
to the list of things they manufacture and
a score more of hands are employed than
in any previous year. A foreign market
for the products of the firm has been re-
cently opened up and when the goods get
as well known in other countries as they
are in this there is no estimated limit of
the prosperity this firm and its employees
will enjoy.
